Label/Format: Parlophone with matt, gently textured surfaces. Side one has the ‘K T’ embossed tax codes, both letters are immaculate, totally unrubbed or worn. These meet the criteria for a ‘first pressing’ with the ‘The Parlophone Co Ltd’ rim text (soon changed to ‘Gramophone’), also the ‘Record First Published 1964’ and ‘Sold in UK subject to resale price Conditions, see price lists’. Not only that, side one has the earliest, very first mother and stamper code – more on that further down.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two very light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. An exceptional pair meeting this criteria and the record plays superbly with beautiful clean surfaces and sound.

Rarity: Few Beatles standard issues are ‘rare’, but original mono copies are hard to find in really top, hardly played condition. Condition is the paramount factor with high percentages of albums played many, many times, often on the most basic of record players and worn out – mono copies usually the most wrecked. Hardly played early albums are much harder to find with clean, little worn covers and this is such a copy. One purchased new by one owner, played only a couple of times and preserved to a very high standard. Not only that, this incredible record has the 1 G mother and stamper code on side one – this being the very first in the pressing sequence making this an exceptional find. For a record pressed in considerable numbers, the chances of finding a 1 G is thousands+ to one. Most Beatles record that surface have higher numbers and multiple letter combinations. Any 1 G record is always special – most seen are on poor selling titles or obscurities that were only pressed in a few hundred or so. But for albums that sold in considerable quantity, the odds become massively less – and few sold like The Beatles during the 1960s. So combine am ultimate 1 G (side one) with a 1 RM (side two) in such amazing, hardly played condition is a considerable rarity.

Brief Info: The Fab Fours fourth album and like those that went before (and after) it sold in vast numbers. Most will know the album well enough, this is a gorgeous example, hardly played and the very best ‘For Sales’ in mono I have seen. The fragile cover is really lovely with only scant clues of its considerable age, the record barely even run-in in vinyl terms and sounds fantastic. My play-grade was a revelation and I heard nothing to fault at all. With the prized ultimate first mother and pressing stamper codes on side one (1 G), this makes for a very special copy indeed, and will prove immensely difficult to find again. A wonderful opportunity for fans and collectors. It came from the owner as the original Stereo version and others I am currently offering.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better for a flimsy gatefold this considerable age, I feel the extra (+) is very close to appropriate. The front and back are laminated, the inside is matt and smooth and has two flipbacks on the right top and bottom. The front face is single thickness card and entry for the record is in the back via the centrefold. All makes for a fragile and damage-prone cover. This has the outline ‘mono’ mode on the front. Printed and made in England, uncredited. The tracing paper lined ‘Use EMITEX’ text inner sleeve is included.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both front and back are very impressive and do actually come quite close to reminding of as-issued. There are a small few mild surface laminate creases, mostly near the sides that few can hope to avoid totally, hardly any on the back, the thin card front is just so delicate. The laminate retains impressively fresh shine and clarity, adhesion is superb as well. This one that often has major lifting or poor surface contact, this has hardly any of either. A mere very fine sliver of a lift on the spine back that hardly registers and little else. Any marks or blemishes few and light, both graphics of the band retaining deep vibrant colour, especially the front which is near reference standard. The one owner cover-protected this for most of its time and the difference clearly apparent. The most fragile of The Beatles covers, and so few survive in this very eye pleasing condition.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside, even the central record entrance area is solidly and intact (for a change), the merest trace of a crease to the top spine area being critical, no tears, all fully intact and very neat indeed. This crucial area the difference between average and exceptional – if the record is removed and inserted many times, this delicate entrance area becomes weak and often splits and tears – few remain crisp and quite solid (or more). Both flipbacks undamaged, solid and crisp as-seen. Few of these remain fully intact and always a delight to see as such.

Top Edges: The back laminated folded back edge is straight and immaculate. The front single thickness card shows barely a trace of thickening and still lays quite flat – avoiding slight curl to the right end is near impossible – any here only light.

Bottom Edges: Virtually as above, finding the front edge still crisp on this storage edge is very hard as well, again cover-protection has served it well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The back closed edge again immaculate, unworn, smooth and straight. The front mostly sharp with any thickening minimal and light, seen viewed end-on. Only very gentle curl to the very ends being very critical again, still almost as flat as they are likely to get.

Spine and Text: Clearly a flimsy, delicate and fragile spine, but still quite solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends on this one were pinched in manufacrtured, and due to the central storage and single thickness card, a little loss in definition is incredible hard to avoid. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A mild tilt to left means the right front edge is a fraction short of flush which means it has been naturally protected by the thicker back. No significant crushing or cracking, so all text is pristine as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs, wear or creasing only light – a light crease on the top front left, in context of fragility, this only mild. Excellent shape mostly retained with no major knocks. Again few will have less wear these days.

Cover Summary: A very strong and highly attractive, fresh all-round example of this very fragile 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, and possibly even most collectors (unless ‘perfection’ is mandatory, and good luck finding those).

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better with only the merest hint of discolouration. A clean and hardly aged vintage inner often means the same for the record, and this applies here. Again, given the great age, this has survived in fantastic condition with all edges naturally intact. This has the original tracing paper style lining which is immaculate as seen through two pristine window circles. This has hardly creased or aged at all and few will be found much better. It has the USE ‘EMITEX’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): which hardly does this 1964 popular mono record full justice. Like the cover an extra (+) is arguably merited as this has been played so little and sounds fantastic. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks are mostly very wispy and faint as mostly seen critically under bright light. Those super-fine traces seen when a record has been wiped by an Emitex cloth, totally harmless and almost invisible unless put directly under a very bright lamp (as I always so). No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a super mono record that should please many, if not most collectors (with the same reference as the cover).

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: These vintage Beatles originals are a thing of genuine beauty when seen and heard as such. This classic more rock orientated early album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. I am more than aware that is a bold statement for any mono record this age – and even more especially for one of the decade’s most popular bands and albums. This offers strong, distortion-free beautiful dynamic mono sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Superbly produced by George Martin, the detail and warmth embedded in these unworn grooves was a revelation. Any surface sounds barely even registered, being honest, I heard none worthy of mention and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will match, let alone outperform this amazing rare 1 G / 1 RM stamper ‘first’ pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am more than certain this record has been played very lightly and has been well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this incredible record. It will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
