Brief Info: With some of England’s finest pop albums on offer – I though it right to redress the balance by offering one of the finest from The United States. Always a pleasure to offer one of the greatest albums ever made. Issued in 1966, this masterpiece of popular music peaked at No 2 in the UK album charts. But things were somewhat different in their native country, where it slowly peaked at No 10. Almost unbelievably in America, this album was not that well received on issue – compared to the multi-million sales of their previous albums, this sold relatively poorly with disappointing sales – clearly the United States were not ready to accept a very different, more experimental Beach Boys. But in relatively short time, ‘Pet Sounds’ was radically reassessed favourably by U.S. critics. Many put the blame of the relative ‘failure’ their to the issue of The Beatles ‘Revolver’ album, which again gripped music lovers of the time. In the United Kingdom, it was received far more positively and it proved popular with impressive sales – a number two peak position was a great achievement – it was never going to displace ‘Revolver’ and ‘The Sound of Music’ soundtrack was also selling in vast numbers. Now rated by many critics and the record buying public, even in America, as one the greatest and important albums ever issued, certainly within the ‘pop music’ genre, this album must rank as Brian Wilson’s greatest ever achievement. Including a host of session musicians, every song on this album works perfectly and has more than stood the test-of-time, it remains one of the most influential albums ever made. The tracks have immense beauty and are superbly arranged and produced with magnificently lush orchestral parts and vocal harmonies – this is simply a perfect pop record with Wilson at his creative peak – this his crowning achievement. This copy on offer is a first U.S. issue mono, these are certainly not easy to find, especially in Europe. In the States, technology was always ahead of the rest, including audio systems. Stereo was now taking over the ageing mono format, and the single channel mode was phased-out quicker here than in the UK, and it now became most people’s first choice – that was not the case in the UK until at least 1968, and arguably even beyond. Most monos that surface are invariably heavily played and wrecked on basic, heavy-tracking record players of the time. So to find one appearing hardly played is far less common. Wilson’s preference for ‘Pet Sounds’ was mono, and after hearing this quite sensational recording on a native American copy, I can see why. This plays with sensational sound with details, warmth and dynamics that almost leaves all others in its wake – I have never experienced this album better than this. The record has one non-feelable white mark within the pressing that does nothing, any other visual marks are light mostly as gentle surface scuffs seen under light – again none sound – this record plays beautifully with hardly anything unwanted. I have found American vinyl to be ‘softer’ than European records, they tend to mark easily, so for a 1966 mono record to surface here in this clean condition is a fine achievement. Especially with a pair of labels that look new, this is a lovely record – and most will know what most mono records of this period will look like these days. All is the same for the cover – these are fragile and wear-prone, but this has survived fully intact with minimal wear or ageing. Even the original promotional inner sleeve is superb and unsplit. There is something very special in holding and playing a first American mono copy of this album, you feel like you have the ultimate genuine article – American band, American copy – it just feels so right. An album of genius and as essential as any record ever could be, most collectors will enjoy this legendary and landmark recording – and I doubt too many copies of this in mono will be found.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated matt format with the paste-on front panel. Made with thick cardboard and has the correct mono catalogue number. Includes the original capitol promotional inner sleeve. Please Note: the black semi-circle on the top edge of both sides is NOT a hole, this is printed on the cover and totally normal on this original sleeve.

Lamination & Front: One of popular musics most famous covers, and this one does it nigh-on maximum justice. Remember just how delicate and fragile these vintage American covers are, this has survived in pretty amazing condition with no splits, thinning or damage at all. Any discolouration or ageing minimal with just the faintest traces near the white edge ends. The main paste-on picture panel is superb with barely even a trace of rubbing or wear, the odd gentle mark or crease (look hard), but little else. The lack of ring wear another huge plus, this vintage American mono cover front will rarely, if ever being honest, be seen better, especially outside the U.S.

Cover Back: Again impressive and largely the same as the front in terms of wear (or lack-of). Yes a little gentle toning traces near the edges again, but little else to fault. So overall, this just gives that very gentle hint of age which I consider perfect for a cover around 50-years-old.

Top Edge: Very straight, solid and unsplit (and no repairs – none needed anywhere on the cover). The white surface gently darkened towards the left corner area.

Bottom Edge: Close to as-made with minimal hint of friction rubs on this perilous storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Remaining almost as sharp as possible with minimal hint of thickening or burring. The card is thick, much thicker than European covers. Record enters on this edge and it is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine: solid, robust and very straight with barely any compression. As usual, purely in manufacture, the surface has natural crinkle, it’s simply the way covers were made in the United States. So a little rubbing on these areas is nigh-on impossible to avoid. So a little clipping to the text here-and-there as seen. But the vast majority of text still present and easy to read.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is minuscule and barely even registers. Superb shape retained, almost as crisp and neat as when made with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A thing of genuine beauty, and these really do exude the feeling of being the ‘real’ thing – sometimes American covers can have the edge, and for native bands they are quite special as they are not seen here often, and rarely like this. This one has largely escaped the ravages of time and travel, this historic piece should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined matt promotional inner sleeve, and remarkably unsplit with hardly any creasing. A trace on one bottom corner, but little else. Imported inners like this rarely escape intact, but this is fully intact with no repairs. Again another historic piece promoting vintage popular music, including the Beatles albums – this will rarely be found better either.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and this hardly does this real justice. A very fine visual copy that is impressively clean with lovely shine and very solidly pressed. Any of the surface marks are light and most faint – one shows more with a white tinge, but this, I am practically certain, within the pressing and importantly, it has NO sound (as per all others). Purely superficial, this vintage mono record has gorgeous audio quality. Few 50-year-old popular classics, especially in mono will survive with fewer visual blemishes. With audio approaching the cleanest, quietest and most detailed I have heard on this title, this should please man, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Firstly – many consider American original pressed records for American bands and artists, offer the very best, cleanest and detailed sound possible – and after playing this, I can hardly fail to agree. This now undisputed masterpiece plays even above its pleasing visual grading with hardly anything to fault. My grading is arguably harsh and I feel it could have been graded higher, I am certain this has hardly been played. But let’s be cautious, it does have some superficial surface marks. This offers beautiful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is sublime with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even register, overall an exceptional clean pressing for a technically complex album that has no tracking issues*. Offering that lovely original sound – no tweaking, digital enhancements or remixing required for what is a perfect production, and the mono mix for many still the definitive way to experience this album – including Brian Wilson. This is superbly produced, engineered and recorded, like ‘Revolver’ issued a couple of weeks previously, this has great technical effects and innovations. But the songs are the ultimate winner, and the vocal harmonies are beautiful beyond my words – all here fully focused and sharp with absolutely no hint of break-up or clarity loss. The detail and range is impeccable, the warmth and depth of the mono mode really standing out. Few original rainbow format copies will outperform this vintage pressing significantly I feel sure. So many mono records trashed by careless handling and playing with worn-out or chipped sapphire tipped stylus. No such ruinous usage for this copy. Okay, a few light surface marks or gentle paper scuffs, but this has more than survived that perilous period for records. Both channels are clean and sharp being played through a very revealing stereo system, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and reasonably carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and the fine details and warm detailed sound will never be bettered by the more ‘modern’ formats. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless total visual perfection is mandatory.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
