As I stated when reviewing The Band's 'Music From Big Pink', 'Big Pink' and its follow-up album 'The Band' represent the greatest compilation of Americana (rock, country, blues, New Orleans jazz) on two albums from any single band, bar none. The output is phenomenal, the songwriting sublime and the sound transcends the era when it was recorded. Does this sound even remotely like something on AM radios in 1969?

Like Big Pink's 'The Weight', 'The Band' album includes an American song of epic proportions in 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down', a tour de force of composition and lyrical defeat that mirrors the American divide from an historical basis. 'Up on Cripple Creek' is indeed a drunkard's dream if I ever did see one, 'Rag Mama Rag' should be played loudly whenever one's wife starts griping, and 'King Harvest' is a sublimely rendered song. 'Jemima Surrender', 'Across the Great Divide', 'The Rocking Chair' and 'The Unfaithful Servant' flesh out The Band's wide-ranging love of music from across North America. This is an essential album for anyone who shares the same diverse musical interests.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

Legend has it that, upon hearing this beautifully poetic and under-adorned masterpiece of simple elegance and elegant simplicity, Eric Clapton decided to give up on heavy electric blues (Cream- style) altogether , and never looked back. Indeed, after 1969 we find him singing and playing southern soul, reggae, pop, disco, hard rock , techno-pop and whatnot, but we no longer get to hear him play 9-minute guitar solos a la Jimi Hendrix. The impact that this, Band’s second album (and a truly historical relic - in more ways than one), exerted on Rock world surely cannot be overestimated. It proved to the world at large that Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Hawkins and John Hammond,jr. were not crazy when they opted to be backed by THE Band. Both songwriting and musical execution are exquisite; the album contains some of the greatest  and most memorable Rock songs ever written and played, and represents one of top-20 best albums of all times. Track listing: Across The Great Divide - Rag Mama Rag - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - When You Awake - Up On Cripple Creek - Whispering Pines - Jemima Surrender - Rockin' Chair - Look Out Cleveland - Jawbone - The Unfaithful Servant - King Harvest (Has Surely Come) .   Finding a still sealed original copy?!?! Forget it – not even a HOPE!!! This may be the last one you will ever see.

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·      CONDITION:

·      THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them.

(b)         The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·      COVER (this is the original “textured” cover)

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a neat, round PROMO cutout hole in one of the corners

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a tiny "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corner (BARELY VISIBLE)  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
