Rudolf Buchbinder (born 1 December 1946, Leitmeritz, Czechoslovakia) is an Austrian classical pianist.

Buchbinder studied with Bruno Seidlhofer at the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1965 he made a tour of North and South America. In 1966 he won a special prize awarded at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Subsequently he has toured with the Vienna Philharmonic and appeared as soloist around the world.

He has also taught piano at the Basel Academy of Music.

For the Teldec label he has recorded the complete keyboard music of Joseph Haydn, all Mozart's major works for piano, all the Beethoven piano sonatas and variations, and both Brahms piano concertos with Harnoncourt and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. With János Starker, he recorded memorable performances of works for cello and piano by Beethoven and Brahms. He has twice recorded the Beethoven Piano Concertos conducting from the keyboard, first with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra for the Preiser label in 2007, and then with the Vienna Philharmonic for the Sony label in 2011; this cycle was recorded live in concert and released on both CD and DVD.

He is one of the few pianists to have ever recorded the entire Part II of Vaterländischer Künstlerverein, which consists of 50 variations by 50 different composers on a waltz by Anton Diabelli. He has also recorded Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, which originally comprised Part I of that anthology. He is a life-long interpreter of Mozart's piano concertos and sonatas, displaying a mastery and sensitivity of these great works, conducting usaully from the keyboard. Indeed Mozart's music is at the heart of his repertoire.

In 2009, Buchbinder was featured in the award-winning German-Austrian documentary Pianomania, about a Steinway & Sons piano tuner, which was directed by Lilian Franck and Robert Cibis. The film premiered theatrically in North America, where it was met with positive reviews by The New York Times, as well as in Asia and throughout Europe, and is a part of the Goethe-Institut catalogue.

A pianist noted for his taste and precise technique, Rudolf Buchbinder has been particularly identified with Austro-Germanic Classical and  Romantic composers, especially since his survey of the complete Haydn piano sonatas for Teldec in the 1970s. Of his later efforts, his recording of the Brahms concertos with Nikolaus Harnoncourt won remarkably high praise upon its release in 2000. In recital, he plays a great deal of 20th century music, but his discography has been devoted almost exclusively to older works. At the Vienna Academy of Music, Buchbinder studied with Bruno Seidlhofer. In 1965, before he'd turned 20, he toured North and South America, and the following year he won a special prize at the Van Cliburn Competition (although he failed to take first, second, or third place). This significantly raised Buchbinder's profile and soon he was touring with the Vienna Philharmonic. He spent the following years as a touring soloist in recital and with orchestras in Europe and the United States. In 1975, he toured the U.S. and Japan with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Vienna's "other" orchestra, and continued to serve as the group's drawing card on tours through the 1990s. He recorded all of the Mozart piano concertos with that orchestra, doubling as conductor. Meanwhile, Buchbinder has also taught piano at the Basel Academy of Music. Concert dates for the 2010-2011 season included stops in Dresden, Madrid, Milano, and Paris. Releases include a DVD of Mozart piano concertos (2006) and CDs of Brahms piano concertos and Beethoven piano concertos. - James Reel              

Rudolf Buchbinder is firmly established as one of the most important pianists on the international scene, he is a regular guest of renowned orchestras and has collaborated with the world's most distinguished conductors. 

He has over 100 recordings to his credit, including the complete cycle of Beethoven sonatas, the complete Beethoven concertos, the complete Mozart piano concertos, all of Haydn's works for piano, both Brahms concertos, and all of the rarely-performed Diabelli Variations collection written by 50 Austrian composers. The 18-disc set of Haydn's works from which this set of sonatas is drawn, earned him the Grand Prix du Disque.

Buchbinder is the founding artistic director of the Grafenegg Music  Festival, a major international music festival near Vienna which launched in August 2007. An insightful musician's musician as well as a much sought after pianist, Rudolf Buchbinder has taught piano at the Basel Academy of Music.

It is said that Haydn's hands (and brilliant compositions) lifted the piano sonata from the drawing room to the concert hall. Not even Mozart would outdo this Austrian master in this particular medium-and, as for faithful performances of these Haydn masterpieces, no one outshines Rudolf Buchbinder, the youngest student (then age five) ever admitted to the Vienna Musik Hochschule. He went on to an illustrious career as a performer and recording artist, and here are his treasured 1974-75 recordings of Haydn's complete piano sonatas.

At the opposite end of the spectrum from Haydn's operas, a recording of his piano sonatas adds less spectacularly to his reputation, partly because they have not been so shamefully neglected in our time (it's easier to record a solo pianist than a whole opera cast) and partly because their quality is less spectacular. Still, beyond the purely musical pleasure which abounds, there is a special kind of joy in the six records of Telefunken set SHD 25 123-T/1-6, which present Haydn's piano sonatas Nos. 1 to 34 in immaculate performances by pianist Rudolf Bushbinder.

The pleasure is that of watching a musical form grow and develop, beginning with the 19 early sonatas written primarily for teaching purposes (Haydn gave keyboard lessons before he became a Kapellmeister ). These pieces are simple and rather square cut, but enjoyable to hear; and they show occasional flashes of genius. The increasingly flexibility and complexity of structure, even among these early works, reflect the growth of an artist who was to continue growing through nearly half a century.

After he became the music director at Esterhaza and stopped having to write with the limitations of students in mind. Haydn's piano sonatas took a quantum leap, shown to some extent in Sonata 20 but most clearly in the sonatas beginning with No. 29 of this collection, which seem to have been composed with an audience in mind and have considerably more sophistication. The final sonatas of this set date from the beginning of the composer's mature period and begin to have features in common with his orchestral works. Sometimes they balance the left hand against the right in a style like that of a concerto - strikingly similar, in fact, to Bach's Italian Concerto.

Even in his later sonatas, which are not in this first volume, Haydn never achieved or even attempted the kind of stromy emotionalism found in Beethoven's greatest piano works; that was not part of his keyboard style (though he did explore strong feelings in some of his middle symphonies), and the pianos of his time would not have been able to handle such treatment. But from the very beginning, even the trifles are trifles produced by a giant, and it is a pleasure to watch him stretching toward his full growth.

It may be well to mention that there are not 34 complete sonatas by Haydn on these six records, although it does contain sonatas 1 to 34. Two of the works included, Nos. 17 and 18, were discovered only in recent years and are attributed to Haydn with some hesitation. Eight others are known only in fragments (chiefly the identifying the matic material Haydn wrote down in his personal catalogue of his works), and those fragments are played by Buchbinder on a seven-inch record packed in with the half-dozen 12-inch records of this set.
