Label/Format: EMI – original very dark purple-blue and red format with ‘The Gramophone Co Ltd’ on the rims (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only two or three very fine and light spindle marks which are faint and show little, there is no wear around the hole area. I have rarely seen this early pressed popular glam classic so little played.

Cat Number: BLN 5001.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. Somewhat above the average for this difficult year when vinyl was regularly pressed thin to conserve the product. This is the heaviest ‘Slider’ I have yet had.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, but this early pressed copy, in this type of condition are much harder to find. An album more often bought by the teenage market of the time and usually played to destruction on low-budget record players. No small wonder most are seen in very poor condition. This copy looks hardly even played and that is very unusual.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Bolan, Finn, Currie and Legend at the height of their glam-rock popularity, they could do no wrong at this time and The Slider is one of their best album after the classic Electric Warrior. Somewhat surprisingly this only peaked at No. 4 in the UK but competition was strong in this fine year. Outrageously ridiculous lyrics never sounded better, Bolan made them sound like poetry and they all belonged together - he made ‘Metal Guru’ sound as normal as ‘Tea For Two’ did forty years earlier - a mark of this man’s genius? As already stated, this is not by any means a particularly hard album to find, but finding a copy in such clean, impressive and lightly played conditions is a different matter. Many were bought by early 70s teenage girls and they got played into submission. This cover ages badly and even a mild rim rub at the bottom, this will never prove easy to find much better. The inner is equally difficult and ring wears just as the main cover, this one is a beauty with barely any wear at all. The record is almost exceptional: heavily pressed with all the details for the connoisseur in near pristine grooves. There is a small pressing mark on the title song, but it has NO sound at all. An album pressed in substantial numbers are pressing quality is never assured – but this copy plays superbly with little unwanted. It was a thrill to hear such a lovely copy for what has been too long. This is a copy that will please many, if not most fans of this legendary performer.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this being quite critical of a cover that rarely wears well. A single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. Comes with the lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: This cover with Marc wearing that strange hat is almost as famous as the man himself, and here is seen to near maximum advantage. A cover that is more often seen very tatty, grubby and especially ring worn. Often with deep full circles cutting into the graphic. Made with fairly thin card, the early pressed records being thicker mean this is rarely avoided. The only ringwear on this one is seen at the very bottom of the front as a fairly small arc that has whitened the dark area a little. I consider this only very light wear on this uncompromising sleeve and the main graphic of the man looks superb overall. Clean with barely any creasing or other rubs, not perfect enough for the perfectionist, but most will enjoy it.

Cover Back: The back is even better and that is more than unusual. Any rim impression or grubbiness is very faint and mild indeed and there is not ‘cutting’ ringwear at all. Any surface marks are tiny, few and very faint indeed and the same for any creases. I have rarely seen this side looking better.

Top Edge: Barely any wear at all.

Bottom Edge: This storage edge has patchy rubbing which is light to moderate with more at the very ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with any thickening or burring very little and mild. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with a little patchy mild compression. The text is near perfect with just a trace of a rub on the ‘S’ in ‘Slider’, but it is very tiny indeed. Any other rub traces are minuscule and finding this spine text better will again prove difficult.

Corners: The bottom right has a moderate rub, the others are only light and very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this somewhat fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This very much attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): little to fault on this and I have possibly never seen better in terms of lack of wear. No creasing, ringwear or rubbing of any note, the red surfaces look amazing and very fresh again. The edges are all unsplit with just a hint of a rub on the bottom centre. The recessed top opening is pristine with no creasing and this inner will take a huge amount of beating.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and an impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed – especially so for a record from this year. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and only showing ultra fine and faint surface hairlines under bright angled light. These most minor of blemishes have no effect on sound and remain almost invisible with normal viewing. Unlined inners were never that kind to delicate playing surfaces that is why many collectors put them in polylined replacements. Sometimes you could actually hear scraping when removing a new record from such an inner, it always made me cringe. The later Floyd titles were particularly bad for this. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This sparsly played and well preserved record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound hardly even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The small mark on the title song is of no consequence whatsoever and all the vocals and music is precise, sharp and focused. The different here being this has never been subjected to heavy tracking record players or played many times. That bucks the trend on a very popular album that was often played to destruction. Bought from new by a more careful, older male owner, few copies will outperform this early example I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
