Label Conditions: Both look practically as made: very clean, fresh and highly attractive and I am struggling to find any spindle marks at all.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 100 grams. Light yes, but plays with superb sound.

Rarity: Moderate: a popular album in the UK and also doing quite well in the US. However, rock classics as promotional copies are rare and seldom seen or offered.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Bolan, Finn, Currie and Legend at the height of their glam-rock popularity, they could do no wrong at this time and The Slider is one of their best albums following the classic Electric Warrior. Somewhat surprisingly this only peaked at No. 4 in the UK but competition was strong in this fine year. Outrageously ridiculous lyrics never sounded better, Bolan made them sound like poetry and they all belonged together - he made ‘Metal Guru’ sound as normal as ‘Tea For Two’ did forty years earlier - a mark of this man’s genius? This an impressive US white label promotional copy that includes the Warner ‘Loss Leaders’ inner sleeve. The record plays superbly and the cover, with the same artwork as the UK version, nice with the main issue being a small numbered sticker on the front covered with clear tape. This may remove if deemed necessary, I personally, I would not risk it. Promos of this type are elusive and seldom seen or offered and one for serious Bolan and and T. Rex fans.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with quite matt surfaces with very gentle texturing. This has the lyrics printed inside, printed in the US and includes the Warner ‘Loss Leaders’ inner sleeve. UK examples were a single cover, so a major variant for T. Rex collectors.

Cover Front: This cover with Marc wearing that strange hat is almost as famous as the man himself, and here is seen to near maximum advantage. The main issue as stated above is a small numbered white sticker cover with clear tape. There is minimal wear to the front at all with any marks few and faint, also hardly any creasing or rubbing, all unusual on this cover.

Cover Back: The back has fine surface marks like whispy friction types, mostly seen under angled light and on the left wide of the coat. The lack of ring wear and creasing a bonus however.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb with little wear, any marks or rubbing tiny and faint, most on bottom right corner tip.

Top Edges: Any rubbing is light and shows little, both edges straight.

Bottom Edges: Light to moderate patchy rubbing, again both straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with any thickening or burring very little and mild. Record enters on the back edge, untrimmed and just a fraction wider than the front.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight and very thick indeed with minimal crushing or compression. The text is near perfect and fully present, no splits to any edge but some mildish evidenct of rubbing on the bottom fold. Being totally white, this registers far less.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this somewhat fragile 70’s cover, a little wear and the sticker of course could detract some, but this US-made gatefold version could prove difficult to find much better. This still attractive overall example should still please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this paper unlined Warner ‘Loss Leader’ inner has little real wear but has some creasing to a couple of corners. Clean, fresh and unsplit edges with no repairs. Fully intact with the mail order coupon uncut and present.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Around EXCELLENT: US albums are usually well-pressed but do tent to mark more easily, this has light surface or movement marks but NO penetrating scratches at all. I feel sure this has hardly been played and sound quality is superb. It should again please many collectors but not the visual perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very rare promotional record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. White label promos rarely show up and for sound it will take some beating, a very fine US copy that many fans and collectors will enjoy and it can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
