Label Conditions: Both clean and attractive, but under light, moderate spindle marks can be seen mostly on side one (the Fly side). Spindle marks on the picture side are considerably lighter.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A typically impressive weight for this first issue.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: First issues that still include the fragile inner sleeve and an intact and attractive poster are scarce. The black cover also wears very badly and the records often played to destruction, often by teenagers of the day. This copy has all the ‘parts’ in fine condition, but the poster has been carefully mounted – the evidence being five small pin holes near the corners that show little on the graphic side especially. The beautifully designed inner, never lined, is immensely delicate and few will avoid splits and tears. This had a neat bottom edge split which I very carefully repaired to avoid any potential further enlargening. The cover has the least wear I have seen for a considerable time. Clearly the record has been played a number of times, but still, overall offers strong sound with only a little light crackle, briefly on a couple or so tracks. It has some surface marks, but these have NO sound – indeed the lack of pops or clicks is a major plus for a very respectable all-round copy. Intact, complete copies of this album are difficult to find and decent, make no mistake.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Bolan, Finn, Currie and Legend at the start of their glam-rock popularity, they could do little wrong at this time and Electric Warrior is arguably their greatest album ever. Now regarded as a genuine ‘classic’, this album sold well and reached No 1 in the album charts. Outrageously ridiculous lyrics never sounded better, Bolan made them sound like poetry. Including two major hit singles in ‘Jeepster’ and ‘Get it On’, this could not fail and didn’t. This, along with Ziggy-era Bowie was British glam-rock at it’s very best. Backing vocals are provided by Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, then members of Zappa’s Mothers. Not a difficult album to find per se, but very early pressings, complete intact condition are a far different story. Many were bought by early 70s teenage girls and they got played into submission and played on goodness knows what. This cover ages badly, and although it has a minor rub traces, it will better most seen or offered. All the contents are in very fine condition and this is a lovely all-round example that should please many collectors.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Some of these had stickers on the front, this one (clearly) does not, and appears never to have had. There is no evidence at all of any sticker marks or residues. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: The lack of rubbing makes this front quite exceptional and in real terms, my grading is quite conservative for one that rarely stands the test-of-time well. So many seen ringworn with scuffs and rubbing to the very black surface. There are a few ultra fine surface creases on the edges and just a couple slightly thicker away from, even these show little and this classic front sets the bar very high.

Cover Back: The back is very similar again, even better really and this could indeed be the rest I have seen for years. How many of these ever escape often heavy ringwear?

Top Edge: Dead straight with barely any traces of rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same, any rub traces tiny, few and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and no feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with only a little lightish compression, mostly near the very centre. The ends are tapered in manufacture. All text is nigh-on perfect and unworn, that also unusual, and there is little rubbing to the vulnerable dark surfaces.

Corners: Light tip rubs are the least to be expected, but any here are just that (or less). Very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive example should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(++) an unlined and fragile inner and superbly illustrated with pictures of Bolan and Finn. With a typically heavy record inside, these do not wear well either – indeed many could have been split from new from record movement. This still looks attractive but is not perfect as the grade suggests. The bottom edge was very neatly split, now carefully and neatly repaired by myself to avoid any further potential widening. There is scant evidence is was ever actually split now. The top opening edge near the centre has softened and creased, clearly from usage and hardly unusual – I refuse to trim to enhance these areas just to make a razor sharp edge – I consider that more damaging than actual natural wear. There is one small split to this entrance as well, this a mere centimetre. A little mildish grubbiness or stain traces, but overall still very attractive and the lack of creasing a huge bonus. The left and right edges are fully intact with no repairs necessary. I hope my pictures do this lovely inner justice and for certain, this will not prove too easy to find significantly better.

The Poster: EXCELLENT(+): and this being very conservative, I have to allow for the five small pin hole on the corners. Clearly this large matt poster, that is made with thick paper, has been enjoyed on a wall in the distant past. The difference is, it was taken down, carefully refolded and kept safe with utmost care. All the folds are solid and unweakened with no splits and the edges are still crisp and neat. Any ageing is very light with even the back pretty clean with few blemishes. The front graphic is superb and the lack of creasing or damage is always great news. NO corners have been torn, just the small holes the only real evidence of usage, but these, as stated, are modestly small and fairly indiscrete. This poster is most prized with this album and so many examples are seen torn and badly creased and damaged – many copies of the record missing it altogether as this was a popular display item for those teenage girls of the early 70s.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD: this has clearly been played a number of times and has numerous, but mostly very fine and light surface marks as seen under bright angled light. These non-feelable and non-penetrating marks have NO sound. I noted no pops or clicks on this tough Fly record at all. A very respectable visual copy that is clean and retains fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. I do not offer records on the third rung of the grading scale often, but all the pluses outweigh any negatives, and if this record did not please me for it’s vast majority, I simply would not offer it. Still an attractive record that should please many collectors but not for the more discerning who want only like new at any cost – and I more than respect that of course.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic early Fly record plays above its high visual grading with not a great deal to fault. Strong, rich sound with high sound quality, it has a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A little, mostly gentle and brief surface sound was noted on a couple or three tracks, but little spoilt my pleasure play-grading this record. The lack of pops and clicks was most welcome and the majority of the songs play to near top grade. A little mild crackle on such an old and very popular record will never prove easy to avoid. As stated above, the fact so many of these were initially bought by school-children and young teenagers of the day and played on very basic record players, it is hardly surprising many are found trashed and unlistenable. Such machines usually tracked with huge down-force rendering groove wear and damage. The lack of penetrating marks is a considerable plus for sure. I remind too, I play my records on one of the world’s most sensitive and respected turntables, so little escapes it’s clinical scrutiny. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. A copy worthy of strong recommendation to those who can accept a 40-year-old record will not always be pristine and has actually been used and enjoyed. This is not perfect visually and does lightly remind of what is being listened to gently and very occasionally, but the majority plays great and the sound and detail is all fully present and the production is how Visconti and the band wanted it be.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
