redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and quite rare LP from Odeon (XOC 111, French pressing, brown/yellow label, mono, laminated flipback jacket) features Henryk Szeryng's first commercial recording of Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61, set down in the warm acoustics of the Maison de la Mutualité, Paris in November 1952 with no less than fellow violinist, the great Jacques Thibaud, conducting l'Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. Incidentally, Szeryng plays Joseph Joachim's cadenzas in the First and Third Movements.

It is not often commented upon just how fine Thibaud’s accompaniment is – it is rich and leonine and comparisons with Munch (Heifetz), Furtwangler (Schneiderhan), et al. are not to Thibaud’s disadvantage.

This performance more often turns up in the later Odeon re-issue (XOC 804) or on a cheap CBS France release (51004). This particular issue boasts what is perhaps the most rare of the 3 jackets this recording can be found in, though the lovely photo is uncredited. There are superb liner notes (also uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in French only.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD-. There is a small ½” tear/seamsplit to the lower-right corner, as well as general edgewear, more so at corners, as well as minor creasing and mild discoloration to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy.
