The sounds and spirits of African music, jazz, European avant-garde, experimental, free improvisation and big-band surface in the music of Sun Ra, yet his sound is a cosmic distillation of music, fantasy and myth – undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and bizarre chapters in the history of American music. His peak period was recording for ESP-Disk’ during the free-jazz revolution, yet his music transcends the realm of jazz or for that matter any other definition. Considered to be one of Sun Ra’s finest mid ’60s recordings – moreover his quintessential – The Heliocentric Worlds saw Sun Ra conducting group improvisations of a music that is extraordinary, unique and without precedent. Of his abundant recordings the Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra vol. 2 is unquestionably amongst the greatest documents available.
