Description

Sun Ra SLEEPING BEAUTY el saturn 11179 jazz funk LP ?OG
unique hand-painted color cover, NM vinyl. Exceptional! Artist(s): Sun-Ra

Title: Sleeping Beauty

Label: Saturn

Condition: EX/NM (Cover / LP)

Comments: Up for bids is a unique copy of Sun-Ra's "Sleeping Beauty." It's really fun to be able to offer special records like this. Unfortunately I need to sell this one because daddy's been splashing out on records lately.

It's got the coolest hand-made cover of any copy I've seen. The front cover is colored with markers, kind of an arch with artist and title therein with egyptian themed design elements. The back is the real treat, with a wild abstract painting/drawing of pyramids using colored markers, silver paint, black permanent marker, and a few other things. I'm not sure how it will show up on pictures, but in person it's pretty impressive and psychedelic, a coherent match for the music itself.

Vinyl is NM. As any Sun Ra fan knows, even a mint Saturn label vinyl will play with light noise. It's a clean and enjoyable listen, as you can hear in the 160 kbps mp3s below... probably as good as it gets for this particular release, because there's not a scratch on it.

Labels are pasted on with the Morton St. address in Philadelphia. This is a common label design for the late-70s / early-80s era Saturns from this period, as Morton St. was the home base of the Arkestra. Some have chicago labels, others philly, others entirely blank. The artwork on different copies of this album can be described charitably as highly variant. I've had three copies of this record, all with slightly different label & cover configurations.

It should be noted that this copy has etched matrix #s that match other copies that have been in my possession. Guaranteed original - it was purchased from a gentleman who personally went to see Sun-Ra in the late 70s. Not a crummy recent-year bootleg.
