Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This excellent LP from Mercury (SR90409, US pressing, plum/silver label, RFR-1 / M2 stampers, stereo) features Janos Starker’s magnificent accounts of Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor Op. 33 and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra Op. 33, both recorded with conductor Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra at Watford Town Hall, London, on 26/27 June 1964 (producer: Harold Lawrence / engineer: Robert Eberenz).

In both works Starker plays with his trademark pinpoint accuracy, but there is no want of delicacy or fantasy and this must be counted among his most successful studio forays – truly exalted music-making by any measure and captured in superlative sound.

Incidentally, the striking cover art was designed by George Mars and Harold Lawrence. There are excellent liner notes by Edward Cole on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is minor bumping at corners, and some evidence of shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although the surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a lovely collector's copy.
