"This album was recorded in late 1989 and released in 1990. This was their fifth album and the last one to feature the mighty Scott Weinrich. This record was recorded in Germany and some of the more noteable "thanks to" listed in the liner notes are: "cheeseburgers, beck's, and McDonald's (fish macs in the morning)"! Did the abundance of fast foods and alcohol have an adverse effect on this record? Here are my ratings of the songs based out of 5 *****:

"Living Backwards" - Fuzzy guitar and a loud,thumping bass usher in Scott's "Ozzy-like" vocals.."I've been gone forever. Lost in my own zone." Fantastic drumming and a backwards sounding guitar solo, ala Kerry King style. A very thunderous, pounding, sludgefest of a tune. "Dreams were made for mortals. None were left for me." Don't worry, dreams are WAY overrated, but this song isn't! A GREAT song! Rating - *****

"I Bleed Black" - Slow, "doomish" sounding guitar and synthesizer howling wind effects pave way for Scott's disturbing lyrics.."Open my veins. I do it everyday." Scott's emotions are made transparent in his fantastic singing on this tune. He really pours every ounce of energy into his vocals. This is a slow, trudging tempo. The tempo picks up for Dave Chandler's guitar solo, as double-bass drum kicks and super heavy bass clear the way for the solo and he really lets fly! A scorching solo from Dave with alot of distortion and whammy-bar use. The tempo resumes it's opening rhythm after the solo. A fantastic piece of molten metal! Rating - *****

"When Emotion Dies" - This is a solo piece with Dave Chandler singing accompanied by multi-layered female backing vocals and acoustic guitar. The background vocals give this piece an ethereal feeling. The lyrics aren't as much sung as they are read. A moody piece. Rating - ***

"Patra (Petra)" - Guitar riff VERY reminiscent of the riff done on "Black Sabbath" opens this tune (only thing missing is the bell chiming). A VERY SLOOOOW tempo then ensues. The feeling of wading through a tar pit overcomes your senses. The tempo picks up steam for the guitar solo as uber thumping bass lines from Mark Adams helps to clear the cobwebs. The slooow tempo resumes after the solo. This is a song about longing for someone you are unable to have and the tempo brings to mind the slow movement of time as you sit alone thinking of the one you can't have. Rating - ***

"Ice Monkey" - Guitar solo opens this song and a mid-tempo beat then begins. There are blazing, short guitar solos tossed in throughout the song. Dave get's center stage with his guitar, and his solos remind me of Iommi's "Trashed" sound. Rating - ****

"Jack Frost" - Solo bass playing starts and then guitar and drums chime in echoing the bass rhythm. The tempo is EXTEMELY SLOOOOOOW! "Winter is coming. You better take care." My body is numb just from the tempo! Dave usher's in the winter with a fantastic display of feedback, distortion, wah-wah use. The aura of a blizzard or gale bearing down on you comes through with the buzzing/howling guitars. The noise suddenly stops and a solo bass signals the storm has passed. You poke your head out to see the damage done..."Your world is smothered. Under frozen ground." sings Scott. The frozen sloooow tempo then resumes. Have a nice winter! Rating - ****

"Angry Man" - This a fast tempo (ANYTHING feels fast after the last tune). The opening pace reminds me of "Children Of the Grave" and the chorus section of "Iron Man". There is some awesome bass playing by Mark Adams (he did write the music for this) and drumming by Armando Acosta. Some great lyrics by Dave Chandler really make this piece..."Hard for me to be happy with sadness all around. Real easy to be angry, ain't no problem to frown." My favorite song from the album. Rating - *****

"Mind Food" - Fuzzy guitar, heavy bass to a punkish beat with psychedelic lyrics! What more do you want? Some great guitar solos? Present! Rating - ****

"Bad pun intended: St. Vitus was doomed from the start. Nudging songs that sounded like Sabbath’s “N.I.B.” on Special K out into a punk rock clime more acclimated to the up-tempos of Black Flag and hardcore outfits like Agnostic Front was as poorly meditated as a three-minute koan.

Contemplating one’s navel and counting breaths never really interested St. Vitus. It wasn’t Trouble or Pentagram’s stein of suds, either. So, the aforementioned did what they did: They fluffed up the fuzz guitars; anchored the bass; fed the drums Dramamine. Vocals were another thing; pace Trouble’s Eric Wagner and Pentagram’s Bobby Liebling; when Scott “Wino” Weinrich filled Vitus’ frontman duties for 1986’s Born Too Late (SST), his snarling baritone pulled Vitus from the gearhead’s tavern stage and placed them at the precipice of a sparsely populated anti-hairmetal front helmed by Great Britain’s Motorhead.

Yet, in many ways, Vitus surpassed Lemmy’s crew, even if they yielded to inevitable disintegration after 1995’s lackluster Die Healing (Hellhound). Weinrich, who had also been putting out records with monolithic metallers, The Obsessed, watched as bandmates Pinhas and Rogers gathered under the moniker Goatsnake, and onetime bassist Scott Reeder fell in line with D&D denizens, Kyuss. Weinrich sauntered on with Spirit Caravan; lent his axe to Tennessee’s Place of Skulls for 2003’s With Vision (Southern Lord), and then formed the overtly political Hidden Hand.

Vitus’ posthumous contribution to fringe metal has been undeniable. The bayou’s Eyehategod, Grief, and Pepper Keenan’s egregious version of Corrosion of Conformity aped Vitus’ slow and low approach. Sunn 0)))’s Greg Anderson took some cues from Vitus, too; their catalog is cited as an influence, and Weinrich’s equipment, namely Sunn’s Model T amps, introduced Anderson to some palpable Low seemingly without End.

Big surprise that Anderson’s Southern Lord imprint tapped Vitus’ V, and now Live for reissue. Live, originally released by Hellhound in ’91, is a snapshot of the band at their apex, clawing through classic anthems of nihilism with beer soaked bravado. Weinrich’s voice pleads and prods, entwining itself with Dave Chandler’s buzzing tremolo and walloping wah. Armando Acosta’s flat fills crash like bumper cars into Mark Adams’ low- slung bass as Weinrich’s voice provides perfect compliment, soaring above the muddy din at slow intervals before diving into self-imposed laryngitis.

The fact that the disc concludes with an Acosta drum solo that segues into Chandler’s guitar quoting The Twilight Zone’s theme is only too salient; Vitus never shied from brandishing rock ‘n’ roll tropes. While other contenders were content with the sonic mope, Vitus strove for the fist pump;  Angels’ old lady’s could shake their azzes to; dirges that their old men could drain beers to. Realizing that this music was recorded nearly 20 years ago not only shows it as “timeless;” it also sadly informs one that no current “metal” band is capable of filling those Red Wing boots." -Stewart Voegtlin, Dusted

Saint Vitus were thee premiere American doom metal act of the '80s. Along with Trouble, Pentagram and the Obsessed, Vitus were pioneers of true-Doom Metal. They were one of the first to fuse the behemoth riffage and bleak atmosphere of Black Sabbath with the desperate aggression of punk rock ala Black Flag.

Their eponymous 1984 debut was released by Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn's SST Records, and was followed in quick succession by the Walking Dead EP and Hallow's Victim album the very next year.

Obsessed frontman Scott “WINO” Weinrich (later member of: Spirit Caravan, Place of Skulls, Hidden Hand, and PROBOT!) joined Vitus on vocals in 1986 (and sometimes guitar) for the classic “Born too Late” album. One more release on SST (“Mournful Cries”), and endless touring (earning them a rabid cult following )climaxed with the release of “V” in 1990.

“V” features the classic doom-anthem: “I BLEED BLACK” and the mid-tempo stomp of the often covered: Angry Man. The production is raw, pure and primitive, the dying emodiment of DOOM. Their undeniable influence on metal can be felt in the homage paid by such bands as: Soundgarden, DOWN (lyrics and riffs blatantly lifted), C.O.C., Eyehategod, Crowbar, GRIEF.

After V and a “Live” album (also re-released via Southern Lord) Wino left Vitus to reform THE OBSESSED. With Wino’s departure Christian Linderson of COUNT RAVEN assumed the vocal mantle as ‘Lord Chritus’ for 1991’s “Children of Doom”. “Lord Christus” stint on vocals was shortlived and eventually VITUS reformed with first singer Scott Reagers for the 1994 ‘Die Healing’ opus. Again this was not meant to be and the band quickly disentegrated.
