Various Artists - "Solid Gold From The Vaults" set of 4 Vinyl LP's.

Complete Set of 4 Original 1991/1992 UK-issue 16-track Compilation LP's on Trojan Records. (Each volume was originally issued separately).

This series of compilations on the iconic Trojan Records label covers a wide range of Jamaican music from the late 1960's and 1970's, and was a project of DJ and collector, Lionel Young (a.k.a. "Sir Tropical Downbeat") - who also published "Ska Special" magazine in the 1970's.

These are notable collections, in part because they contain a lot of stuff (including many gems) which is hard to find, and dosen't feature on many (if any) other Reggae collections. Early cuts from Reggae icons like The Wailers, Lee Perry etc. are included, as well as less well-known and downright obscure JA rarites.

The front cover photo for the first 3 volumes is the old "Muzik City" Record Shop in Ridley Road, Dalston, London.

Many of the recordings are the original Mono versions.

Volume 1 (1991) :-  "This is a fine first installment to Trojan's "showcase (of) rare classic singles of the golden era of Jamaican music, from the sixties to the early seventies." Selected by London DJ Sir Tropical Downbeat, the set features version numbers as well as rock steady vocals and instrumentals. Dave Barker's treble-heavy, yelping DJ exclamations on "Shocks 71" start things off in an uproarious manner, with Winston Williams following suit on "DJ's Choice" and "People's Choice." Stratospheric organ solos and dark trombone rumblings figure prominently on instrumentals like Herman's "New Love" and the Rhythm Ruler's "Proud Feeling," while the Bleechers lay down some airy harmonies on "Ease Up." Hints of reggae show up on Stranger Cole's "Help Wanted" and Carl Bryan's "Red Ash." The sound is a bit rough, but that's what one would expect with a collection of rare sides. Of great appeal for the fan of the early years of Jamaican music, but probably not a good call for anyone new to the music."

Volume 2 (1991) :- "This is the second of four Trojan compilations featuring rare ska, rocksteady, and early reggae. The emphasis this time out is on ska and reggae sides, with the Wailing Wailers (featuring a young Bob Marley), the Skatalites, and the Maytals being the only high-profile acts present. While these legends all make spirited contributions, what really dazzles is the more obscure material like Tommy McCook's dizzying instrumental "Out of Space," Baba Brooks' rude boy theme "Seven Guns Alive," and Don Drummond's loping trombone number "Dragon Weapon." Switching from ska, the second half of the disc includes an early reggae mix of soulful vocals, DJ cuts, and instrumentals. The rarely heard singer Hemsley Morris particularly impresses with his smoky and vulnerable delivery on "Little Things," while DJ U-Roy Junior "let(s) the music shock you" on "Sharper Than a Razor" and Dice & Cummie bring Jamaican patois to the fore with their amusing ganja dialogue "Real Collie." Getting top honors here, though, are Randy's Allstars' massive groove on the organ grinder jam "Solid Gold" (presumably the series namesake as well) and producer Herman Chin Loy's innovative, early dub exploration "Invasion." A great and nicely varied collection with decent to fine sound throughout. Once again, kudos to London DJ Lionel Young (aka Sir Tropical Downbeat) for the tasty excavation work in selecting the tunes."

Volume 3 (1991) :-  "This third Solid Gold collection features obscure rocksteady and early reggae from 1968-1971, including plenty of choice DJ and instrumental sides. The first half focuses on the men at the mike, with Niney Holness and the Observer Allstars paving the way with an eerily stratospheric version of their classic "Blood and Fire" cut. Dennis Alcapone follows, displaying his considerable toasting skills on workouts of John Holt's "Togetherness" and the Uniques' "Blessed Are the Meek." After a respite supplied by groove-heavy instrumentals from organist Winston Wright and the Harry J Allstars (featuring Val Bennett on tenor), there is more fine DJ work on a few rarefied tracks by the seldom-heard Sir Harry and a fine offering by I-Roy Junior. For the second half, the focus shifts to vocal material, notably some stirring harmony cuts by the Righteous Flames and the Bleechers. And bringing things full circle, pianist Gladstone Anderson contributes the incredible noir instrumental "Movie Star" and Lee "Scratch" Perry and the Upsetters offer up some predictably askew studio textures on the proto-dub track "Takio" (replete with all manner of vocal emanations from Scratch). A rough and wobbly set, but one that will definitely please broad-minded reggae fans."

Volume 4 (1992) :-  "This is the fourth and last volume of Trojan's impressive Solid Gold from the Vaults collection of rare ska, rock steady, and early reggae sides. Along with reggae soul tracks like Winston Heywood's "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and Jackie Edward's "I Do Love You," there are DJ numbers like U-Roy and Lee Perry's "Dreamland Version," and a nice organ workout on Winston Wright's "Top Secret." The second half veers into ska territory with contributions by the Skatalites, as well as some more boss organ work, this time provided by Jackie Mittoo. If there could be such a genre as "crime-jazz rock steady," then there's some of that too by way of the loping beats, nocturnal horns, and bordello piano riffs on the Soul Brothers' "Hot and Cold" and Roland Alphonso's "Moodorama." Once again, there are nice picks by Lionel Young, aka Sir Tropical Downbeat, from the Muzik City collection. Sonically speaking, all of the volumes in this collection provide a bit of a rough guide to Jamaican music's golden era. If you are a fan of the music, though, they are all certainly worth getting." 

All 4 volumes are in (as near as makes no difference) Immaculate, "As New" condition all round (see detailed gradings below). - A Great chance to score the complete original set of these notable collections in "shop fresh" condition !
