Description
One of the outstanding organists of the 20th Centruy was undoubtedly GEORGE THALBEN-BALL who held the post of Curator of the Organ and also Organist of the Royal Albert Hall in London for 53 years from 1934 until his death at the age of ninety in 1987.
Even more remarkable was his 62 years tenure as organist and choir director of the Temple Church. He combined these duties with his work as Religious Music Adviser at the BBC and similar posts in Birmingham. He somehow found time to be Professor of Organ Studies atthe Royal College of Music.
But that wasn't all. His international reputation as a concert organist, broadcaster and recording artist was unequalled. He was described by the Master of the Queen's Music as 'an era of music, musical performance and practival teaching all rolled up into one genial and profoundly lovable person.!
A memorial concert was held in the Royal Albert Hall on September 20th 1991 and this is the official 24-page programme of that concert with details of Sir George's life, a history of organs and organists and much more.
I am also offering a photograph of Sir George below which is a hand-written signature on a separate 4" x 2" card loosely attached to allow for re-framing. I know it is genuine because I obtained it myself in 1947. The writing says 'Yours Sincerely George Thalben-Ball 13-x-47'
