Once in a lifetime opportunity to collect a set of 31, extremely unique, original owner, 7" early 1980's ska, rock, new wave and experimental singles featuring ground breaking stars, cult favorites and obscure artists. Highly collectible and impossible to find imports. Includes the following:
1. The Specials 1980 Two-Tone Records (5-song EP - Made in France). A - 1. Too Much Too Young, 2. Guns of Navaronne, B - 1. Longshot Kick the Bucket, 2. Liquidator, 3. Skinhead Moonstomp....(Ska revival's premiere band, formed in Coventry, England in 1977. They combined danceable ska and rocksteady beats with punk's energy and attitude...and with a more focused and informed political and social stance).
2. The Selecter 1981 Chrysalis Records (Made In England). A - Celebrate the Bullet, B - Last Tango in Dub....(Also from Coventry, and like many of the ska revival bands, they featured a racially diverse line-up fueled by Pauline Black's delicious vocals and the pounding rhythms of Desmond Brown on .3hammond organ).
3. Madness 1980 Stiff Records (4-song EP - Made in England). A - 1. Night Boat to Cairo, 2. Deceives the Eye, B - 1. The Young and The Old, 2. Don't Quote Me On That....(Formed in Camden Town (London) in 1976, this ultimate British party band departed from traditional ska by adding bits of soul and Brit Pop to their sound).
4. Rico 1980 2 Tone Records (Extremely Rare Instrumental Single). A - Sea Cruise, B - Carolina....(Jamaican born musical legend "aka Rico Rodriguez" played trombone with the Specials on such classics as "A Message To You Rudy" and has been recording since 1958 ).
5. The Congos 1978 Go-Feet Records (Made in Great Britain) A - Fisherman, B - Can't Come In....(Formed in 1975 during the golden age of reggae and first produced by the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry, they recorded in 1977 what many consider to be the greatest reggae album of all time "Heart of the Congos).
6. UB40 1981 DEP International Records (Made in Great Britain). A - Don't Slow Down, B - Don't Let It Pass You By....(Formed in 1978 in Birmingham, UK, the name UB40 was selected in reference to the document issued to people claiming unemployment benefits. Their early musical style was unique with a heavy emphasis on analogue synthesizers, psychedelic guitars, saxophone, and most significantly, dub producer techniques).
7. Grace Jones 1980 Island Records (Made in Great Britain). A - Private Life, B - Shes's Lost Control Again....(Jamaican born singer with a string of dance-club hits who also became a muse for Andy Warhol. One of her trademarks was her ability to re-imagine songs by artists as diverse as The Pretenders, Sting, Iggy Pop, and Joy Division among many others).
8. Grace Jones 1981 Island Records (Made in Germany). A - Demolition Man, B - Warm Leatherette
9. Elvis Costello and the Attractions with The Royal Guardian horns 1982 A&M Records (Made in England). A - Party Party B - Imperial Bedroom....(From the Party Party soundtrack).
10. The Bongos 1982 Fetish Records (Made In England). A - Zebra Club B - Certain Harbours....(Guitar-driven pop with a heavy influence of the avant garde. Originators of what would be called the Hoboken sound).
11. Billy Bragg 1985 Go! Discs Go! Records (Made in England). A - 1. Between the Lines, 2. Which Side Are You On, B - 1. World Turned Upside Down, 2. It Says Here (Different Version)....(4-song EP dedicated to the work of the Miner's Wives Support Groups)....(English alternative rock musician and activist who blends elements of folk, punk rock and protest songs).
12. Kid Creole and the Coconuts 1982 Ze Records (Made in England). A - Stool Pigeon (remixed version), B - In the Jungle (remixed version), A - He's Not Such A Bad Guy (After All) (live), B - There But For The Grace Of God Go I (live)....(Extremely rare, 2-disc double pack with live tracks)....(A multi-cultural musical carnival featuring latin and south american styles influenced by the American big band era).
13. The Ray Beats 1981 Don't Fall Off The Mountain Records (Made in UK) A - Holiday Inn Spain, B - Cocktails....(Instrumental neo-surf rock combo from NYC that arose from the No Wave musical scene).
14. The Flying Lizards 1980 Virgin Records (Made in England). A - Move On Up, B - Portugal....(British experimental rock band consisting of a loose collective of avante-garde and free improvising musicians).
15. Martha and the Muffins 1980 Dindisc Records (Made in Great Britain). A - 1. Primal Weekend, 2. Paint By Number Heart, B - Indecision, 2. Cheesies and Gum....(Extremely rare, 4-song live single)....(Canadian new wave,synth pop band).
16. Martha and the Muffins 1981 Dindisc Records (Made in England). A - Women Around The World At Work, B - Twenty-two in Cincinnati
17. Nervous Germans 1982 Rondelet Records (Made in Great Britain). A - These Boots Are Made For Walking, B - Watch Out....(Short-lived German new wave band from the early 1980's).
18. Gary Holton 1980 Safari Records (Made in England). A - Ruby (Don't Take Your Love To Town), B - Listen; Love is Young....(English actor and musician from London who died of a heroin overdose in 1985. At 17 he joined the touring company of Hair and at 19 fronted the rock band Heavy Metal Kids. He temporarily fronted The Damned in 1978 on a short Scottish tour and was unsuccessfully recruited to replace the late Bon Scott in AC/DC).
19. Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls 1980 Illusive Records (Made in England). A - Mr. X, B - Two Shots....(Side project with Penetration singer Pauline Murray and punk poet John Cooper Clarke's backing band, The Invisible Girls)....(they only produced 1 LP and 3 singles, of which this is the only one not also released in a 10" version).
20. The Fun Boy Three 1982 Chrysalis Records (Made in England - color picture disc). A - The Telephone Always Rings Twice, B - Alibi....(Short-lived (1981-1983), but successful English new wave/pop band created by former members of the Specials (Terry Hall, Neville Staples and Lynval Golding). Known for lyrical pessimism, deadpan humor and themes of insecurity and uncertainty).
21. Pigbag 1982 Y Records (Made in England). A - Getting Up, B - Go Cat....(British post-punk funk (heavy on the horns) band with a distinctive sound that incorporated elements of punk, jazz, funk, ska, reggae and even tribal world music).
22. The Regular Guys 1980 (Ultra Rare 4-Song Debut Single). A - 1. It's A Secret, 2. Leave, B - 1. Too Dumb, 2. I Forgot the Flowers....(Popular, late 70's power pop band from Lawrence, Kansas who opened for The Only Ones, and Secret Affair from England and a very early Irish band called U2...reference John Odell and the Regular Guys for complete bio).
23. Mink DeVille 1980 Capitol Records. A - This Must Be the Night, B - 1. Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl, 2. -Lipstick Traces....(Although they were one of the original house bands at CBGB's ('75-'77), at heart they were an R&B band with Willy DeVille an old-fashioned soul singer).
24. Graham Parker 1982 RCA Records. A - No More Excuses, B - 1. You Hit the Spot (Live), 2. Another Grey Area(Live)....(Fronting Graham Parker and the Rumour, he built a reputation for incendiary live performances. Although not as famous as his contemporaries (Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson), he actually preceded them in establishing an early recording career).
25. Gram Parsons and the Fallen Angels 1982 Sierra Records (Ultra Rare Companion Single). A - 1. Bony Moronie, 2. 40 Days, 3. Almost Grown, B - 1. "Conversations", 2. Hot Burrito # 1....("Enormously influential" for blending country and rock to the point that they became indistinguishable from each other. Originally formed to promote his first album with Emmylou Harris (GP 1973), this single was part of the Live 1973 WLIR radio in-studio performance).
26. Maureen Tucker 1981 Trash Records(Extremely Rare Solo Single). A - Around and Around, B - Will You Love Me Tomorrow?....(Best known as the drummer for The Velvet Underground. She had an unconventional playing style (standing, rather that seated). She plays all instruments on this single).
27. R.E.M 1983 I.R.S. Records (Extremely Rare Second Single) . A - Radio Free Europe, B - There She Goes Again....(This is the I.R.S. version of their 1981 Hib-Tone Records debut single).
28. The Cold 1980 Top Pop Records (Ultra Rare Debut Single). A - You, B - Three Chord City....(New Orlean's most popular local rock band, featuring songwriter/bassist Vance DeGeneres (yes, Ellen's brother and co-creator of Saturday Night Live's "Mr. Bill") and vocalist Barbara Menendez. Labeled the Blondie of New Orleans, The Cold were a tight, upbeat 5-piece alternative to the safety pin punk scene, fusing girl groups, surf music and 60's British invasion bands like The Dave Clark Five).
29. The Cold 1981 Top Pop Records (Second Single). A - Mesmerized, B - Wake Up...(At the height of their fame, they drew and average crowd of 800. Watch an incredible clip from "The Cold 1981 TV Special" filmed at the hallowed club Jimmy's in uptown).
30. Bas Clas 1981 Serfdom Records (Ultra Rare Second Single). A - Physical World, B - Serfin USA....(Cajun for "low class", this seminal Lafayette, La. band offer straightforward rock and roll and add an attitude of political and social awareness. Opened for X at the legendary Chateau in downtown Lafayette in 1983).
31. Ash Can Cats 1981 Zeb Meat Records (Extremely Rare Debut Single). A - If I Can't Dance, B - Dirt Road....(Obscure, early Athens, Ga. power/pop legends).
***This collection represents an outstanding retrospective of the very early 1980's ska, rock and alternative music scene featuring established stars, obscure artists and impossible to find cover versions. Extremely collectible and hard to find imports....(Ex: The out of print The Cold debut single sells for $30).
NOTE: All discs have rarely been played and are in Very Good to Excellent plus condition. Covers range from Fair to Excellent condition (note: the Martha "live", plain white sleeve is in very good condition even with the handwritten additions. The Pauline Murray plain, white sleeve is in poor condition). There is a small personal signature in pen at the bottom edge of each cover
