Album Review

• The first album by Sailor dropped onto the U.K. glam scene in late 1974 like the greatest secret you've never been told. Comparable in its underground impact to the first, similarly overlooked albums by Cockney Rebel and Queen a little over a year earlier, Sailor boasted a spellbinding introductory single, "Traffic Jam," a slew of magical follow-throughs, and the promise of a glittering future that could not have been broadcast any louder. And so it proved -- a year on, and Sailor was everywhere. "Traffic Jam" remains one of the group's finest achievements, an ecologically themed reflection on the history of the motorcar, executed in shamelessly Beach Boys-esque style. "Let's Go to Town" and "Sailor's Night on the Town," meanwhile, conjure visions of a bizarre collision between 1cc and Jacques Brel, poignant pop with a beautifully bittersweet bite. Even "Sailor," certainly the weakest track on the entire album, is vindicated by the atmospheric chorus of foghorns that balances the brittle superficiality of the song itself. It is difficult to play favorites among the first three Sailor albums -- like the other bands to which the group can most readily be compared (add Roxy Music and Sparks to the aforementioned litany), each has a distinct character that is as unique as it is inseparable from the main body of work. However, simply for the joyous rush of "Traffic Jam" and the aching melancholy of "Josephine Baker," Sailor stands not only as a dynamic introduction to the magic of this band, but also as the yardstick by which the group could not help but measure its own future endeavors. ~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide

• Unlike in the States, music hall had a much longer life span in the U.K., kept alive at summer season seaside shows, its influence percolating out as far as punk -- think Ian Dury & the Blockheads, and even into Two Tone via Madness. Sailor represented the best of this tradition, from their sailor caps to their bell bottom trousers, their port of call stage set, and their sing-along songs. Their eponymous debut album disembarked in 1974, with their "Glass of Champagne" single rocketing to number two on the British chart the following year. "Girls Girls Girls" returned them to the Top Five in 1976, with "One Drink Too Many" tottering to number 35 in 1977. The fact that Sailor even managed that last hit says much about their fan's undying loyalty, what with punk slaying virtually every other established act on the scene. Even so, the group called it a day in 1978. A dozen years later, the original quartet re-formed and began touring again, although Georg Kajanus departed in 1995, with Henry Marsh following later in the decade. With Peter Lincoln and eventually Rob Alderton enlisting, Sailor continued playing live, with a two-CD set recorded in England at The Swan in High Wycombe in November, 2002.

• This record came from a record store called "Phantasmagoria" which was located in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Phantasmagoria went out of business in 1978. I purchased most of their unsold inventory some years later when I owned "Music Madness" - a new & used record store in Catasauqua.
• Phantasmagoria used round colored stickers to indicate the price of the albums. They had a sign on the wall with the color sticker combinations for the customers to use so they knew the price of the albums. Most of the albums still have these stickers on them, and in some rare cases, the stickers are written on. Some of the records have prices on them. This is the price you would have paid for the record in 1978 if you would have bought it at Phantasmagoria. Please don't confuse these prices with their current value.
• All sealed albums are being sold as collector's items and cannot be returned due to manufacturer's defects. It may be almost impossible to replace many of the sealed albums that I am selling.
