Dan Hill finally hit the big time with his third record, Longer Fuse, scoring a number three hit with "Sometimes When We Touch." A painfully earnest love song, Hill sounds pained when admits that "Sometimes when we touch/The honesty's too much" -- which fits, because sometimes when Hill sings, the honesty's too much. For such a sweet, mellow singer, it's rather shocking that his words are so bluntly candid in their confessionals and as artfully rendered as musings in a diary. Here, he tempers the journal-like tendencies of Hold On, but there are moments that are startling in their forthright honesty, as when "McCarthy's Day" kicks in and you realize that he's talking about his interracial parents on the run during the days of blacklisting. Also, the songs on Longer Fuse hit harder because the production is scaled back, sounding like it's nothing but his voice and guitar even when other instruments are present on every track. Where some singer/songwriters would excel in this stripped, bare setting, there's too much specificity in the words and not enough form in the music to have this stand steadily on its own legs. At times, it's fascinating to hear Hill's earnest voice sing such soul-baring lyrics -- it's the equivalent of hearing a journal read aloud -- but the album as a whole doesn't follow through on "Sometimes When We Touch," lacking that sentimental soft rock classic's sense of melody and sweetness. Compared to the rest of the record, it seems restrained, which explains a lot about why Longer Fuse doesn't quite work.

Born in Toronto, Hill is an unabashedly sentimental singer/songwriter. As a teenager, Hill was a major fan of vocalists like Frank Sinatra. He became popular in Canada, and his debut album was released in 1975. In 1977, he co-wrote the highly emotional "Sometimes When We Touch" with Barry Mann, and it became a Top Ten smash in the U.S. After a few lesser hits, he seemingly disappeared, but mounted a comeback in 1987, scoring another Top Ten hit with "Can't We Try," a duet with Vonda Sheppard. He has charted a few times on Billboard's adult contemporary chart since then.

• This record came from a record store called "Phantasmagoria" which was located in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Phantasmagoria went out of business in 1978. I purchased most of their unsold inventory some years later when I owned "Music Madness" - a new & used record store in Catasauqua.
• Phantasmagoria used round colored stickers to indicate the price of the albums. They had a sign on the wall with the color sticker combinations for the customers to use so they knew the price of the albums. Most of the albums still have these stickers on them, and in some rare cases, the stickers are written on. Some of the records have prices on them. This is the price you would have paid for the record in 1978 if you would have bought it at Phantasmagoria. Please don't confuse these prices with their current value.
• All sealed albums are being sold as collector's items and cannot be returned due to manufacturer's defects. It may be almost impossible to replace many of the sealed albums that I am selling.
