Rising from the ashes of 60’s Psych/Prog band “Information”, Scarecrow were formed. Scarecrow had become regulars on the London pub circuit by the mid 70’s. With all members being from London (rare in itself in the capital) this probably allowed them to play well over 300 gigs in one year, not travelling too far from the capital for any of them. The experience that this brought, showed; a good solid rhythm section, twin/harmony guitars, plus lead guitar/vocals, all underpinned by solid rhythm/melody guitar, stood them apart from the turgid rock melee. By ’77 they figured they had well over 2 LP’s worth of original (live) songs under their belt and the live vibe was well established. It was only a matter of time (and funding) before these songs would be committed to vinyl. They had already recorded material for different studios by ‘77, which for reasons too complicated to go into was never released – an all too familiar story. It became obvious that most rock music in London at this time was fashion or fad based. Despite this and despite Scarecrow finding themselves in the midst of a “Punk” revolution they acquired quite a cult following. Their gigs were more a gathering of friendly like minded enthusiasts rather than a business. In early 1978 things were moving fast and there was a suggestion to make, record and release a live LP – that year! A sympathetic bank manager advanced some money to the band and a sound engineer was found, Pete. Pete just happened to be guitarist Gordon Giltrap board man, and he just so happened to be at a gig (he was also a fan, you see). Pete offered to mix the group live onto John Stewarts’ (lead vocals and guitar) Revox 77, a stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder running at 15ips!! Those were the days, eh? All this came together during the Easter of 1978 when two gigs were recorded and eventually used to compile the LP. The album was released on Spilt Milk just before Christmas 1978. In it’s original format (of which this is) the record was in a wrap-around sleeve (like the Mike Absalom Vertigo LP, or early pressings of Hawkwinds’ Space Ritual). It came in a limited numbered pressing of 1000 – this copy is number 0033! The LP, which lasts over 45 minutes, features six original songs (Politician, Reasons for Living, Love’s Confusion, Lonely Man, Reflections and The Journey) and came from that mythical (2 LP’s worth?) 50 plus song repertoire. As one reviewer of the time put it - “English rock music played with style and grace”. The LP was enjoyed by fans and collectors alike and within a couple of years was changing hands in excess of £200. It has never been re-issued although a German company did counterfeit it – taping it directly from the LP onto CD. The group made several more studio recordings in the early 80’s but again, none of these were ever released. From 1978 and limited to a press run of 1000 ONLY!
