He wanted to cross over into secular rhythm & blues, but his gospel label (Specialty Records) feared that church fans would be deeply offended by him singing love songs. To sneakily test the pop market, the studio released "Lovable" under the fake name Dale Cook (using his middle name, Dale). However, his smooth, distinct, glass-like vocal delivery was completely unmistakable. Gospel audiences recognized him instantly, causing a major stir that ultimately led him to leave the group, change his name officially to "Sam Cooke" (adding the 'e'), and release his #1 hit "You Send Me" later that year!
