Silver-haired songweaver David Sylvian's second solo LP, Alchemy, came in 1985, swerving the leftward path between his debut Brilliant Trees and the expansive double set Gone To Earth. The London-based former Japan frontman, newly free of the group's glam art-pop frame, used Alchemy as a testing ground for side projects and film scores. Its five pieces pull from collaborations with Jon Hassell, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Can's Holger Czukay, moving from the three-part suite 'Words With The Shaman' through the meditative 'Preparations For A Journey' to the brooding, half-hour 'Steel Cathedrals', made for a short film with Yasayuki Yamaguchi. First released as a limited cassette and later a vinyl edition, the LP now returns in a 2025 reissue, casting renewed light on a long-form experiment from the art pop psychic.
