SWITCH BLADE SAM
astounding rockabilly !
Whether you know him as Jeff Daniels, or as Luke McDaniel, he's a might, mighty powerful rockabilly singer. He came out of Laurel, Mississippi but made his mark with this record in May of 1959 when he was recording for Big Howdy Records.
He had already cut a load of records for King as Luke McDaniel between 1953-'55, and there's even a pair of 1952 releases on Trumpet. But this one, this is the real gem. "Switch Blade Sam" is a rollicking, romping, sneering, knife-wielding rockabilly number that is one of the best of 1959. It's got quite a reputation among rockabilly collectors and can be heard on many compilations with colorful names like 'Rockabilly Bash,' 'Juvenile Jungle,' 'As Good As It Gets,' 'The Last Great Rockabilly Saturday Night,' and my favorite title, 'Rock 'n' Roll Orgy.'
The song had Jeff showing up at a house party and they mistake him for the cops and all guys jump out the window and hightail it for the woods. Who was it that ran? Believe it or not, it was the rock 'n' stars Charlie Brown, Stagger Lee, and Switch Blade Sam. That left the girls all alone with Jeff. And who was that? Long Tall Sally, Mary Lou, and Lucille, of course. Jeff's a real name dropper in this party of a song and it's got all the rough edges you'll love.

On the flipside is "You're Still On My Mind." There's a black check mark on this side of the record, but then EVERY copy of this record has a similar check mark. Perhaps that's the way they marked it for promo as to what the 'plug side' was.
It seems that Jeff Daniels also recorded for Sun Records in 1956-57, knocking out some nine rockabilly number that were never issued. This record on Big Howdy comes hot on the heels of those sessions.
CONDITION: NEAR MINT! This record is free from scuffs and scratches but has some recycled content in the vinyl which show up as small specks in the wax. You can't hear them, but they can be seen.
