Surgeon's Balance album, first released way back in 1998, remains one of the Birmingham producer's finest moments. While rooted in his now familiar brand of no-holds-barred techno, it also saw him embrace brighter moods and melodies, arguably for the first time in his career. So while there's plenty of fearsome, floor-friendly fodder to be enjoyed - see the relentless throb and hum of "Circles" and spooky "Set One", amongst others - home listeners were soothed by the pitched-down acid electronica of "Pnuma", the yearning ambience of "Dinah's Dream", and the broken techno rush of "Golden", whose glacial tunefulness still resonates. If you missed it first time around, don't sleep this time.
