Label/Format: Decca (Deram Nova) with matt, smooth surfaces and small label format size.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side one has hardly any at all.

Cat Number: SPA 72.

Mode / Speed: Stereo (not issued on mono) / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. A typical very solid weight for this Decca-made record.

Rarity: Scarce: although this one-off sampler album has a Decca label, it is part of the Deram Nova series of albums. Issued in June 1970, midway through the short ‘Nova’ catalogue run, this IS considered part of the set and very collectable. This is no ordinary sampler, this includes some very rare tracks and artists on original vinyl, many rarely seen and the main albums commanding very high prices.

Brief Info: A scarce sampler, but one of the best progressive ones I have heard. This promotes the more interesting Deram Nova artists and bands, clearly it did not do a great job as most of them sold in very small, or even tiny numbers. I doubt if sales of this sampler sold many units itself and is quite elusive in its own right. The owner of this one without doubt hardly played it and this is a really top copy of this elusive record. Just about every act on the Nova label’s main albums sold in very poor amounts and most are seldom seen or offered. Top prog acts like Egg, Aardvark, Jan Dukes De Grey, superb folk acts like Sunforest (one of my personal favourites on this label) and Bill Fay and other highly original bands like Galliard and Black Cat Bones et al. are featured here, with some tracks the finest from the full albums. The Nova series, a subsidiary of Deram, in turn part of Decca, was a short-lived specialist label made to promote new, less commercial and ‘progressive’ acts. It folded by the end of 1970 and most albums lost in the vaults of time. Here a great chance to experience many of these acts, many of which deserved to sell in great numbers and become successful. But in the music business many, sometimes through lack of promotion or airplay, fail to find an audience. Only with time are such acts appreciated more, but alas, now so hard to find.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace and includes the Decca-style blue polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The front retains a fine shine and clarity. Slight dulling from the thick records rim seen under angled light. No lifting and hardly any creasing at all, any press marks or surface blemishes few and light. Little detracts from this colourful and scarce cover front.

Cover Back: The back shows the rare album cover fronts, this has only gently aged with a rim impression near the top edge, lesser elsewhere. Light discolouration/grubbiness which is hard to avoid totally on black and white unprotected backs. This has a three digit stamp on the back below the catalogue number near the top right corner, probably from the retailer who solid it. Overall, a fine back to match the front.

Top Edge: Straight with barely any wear, the lack of bowing on this Clarifoil laminated cover unusual.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge, guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All corners are crisp and very neat indeed with no dinks. Barely any rubbing with excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this elusive 1970 cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: also with the match ‘834’ stamp number as the cover. This in super shape with only a little seam adhesive darkening but hardly any real wear. Two immaculate window circles and a very clear and neat polylining. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with repairs. This importantly date-coded 5-70 (May 1970).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): or better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and a typical solid-weight Decca pressing. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light – this probably worthy of the extra (+) being honest. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This top quality and scarce ‘prog’ rock/folk sampler plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played hardly at all and has been carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – as stated, this is officially another in the Deram Nova run and series of albums and not to be dismissed as ‘just another sampler’. It is a superb album in its own right.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
