ORIGINAL 1965 SATURN RECORDS PRESSING (SR-9956-2-O/P) OF SUN RA'S 'Angels And Demons At Play' CONTAINING SOME OF THE ARKESTRA'S EARLIEST RECORDED MATERIAL
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL 1965 ISSUE, IN 1967 IT WAS RE-RELEASED WITH THE '407' CATALOGUE NUMBER
Side One was recorded in 1960, including two tracks taken from the mammoth session either at Hall Recording Company or at the RCA Studios (both in Chicago), around June 1960 whilst the tracks on Side Two were recorded at the RCA studios, Chicago, around February 1956.
At least three of the songs; 'Medicine for a Nightmare', 'Urnack', and 'A Call For All Demons' had previously appeared on early Saturn 7" singles
The album is distinctive among early Saturn releases in its complete lack of liner notes - there was no room for any, the same design was used on the front and back.
The cover design is one of three originally done as cutouts in black on a white background.
While the 'Angels and Demons' cutout was actually used (in a striking black on gold rendition), the other two, initially intended for the early New York albums 'When Sun Comes Out' and 'When Angels Speak of Love', were displayed in a 1966 Saturn catalogue but replaced with different covers when the LPs were released

Clean, bright and unmarked labels with only one or two light spindle traces per side
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT
Both surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen.
There are some superficial pressing blemishes and pressing 'dimples' (inherent in these small scale independent pressing) but none of these have any significant audio impact.
Pressed in very, very small numbers - El Saturn Records purchased no advertising, gave out no promotional copies for review, and no distribution channels were available except mail order, hand delivery to the record shops, and, in the southern tradition, sales from the bandstand after performances
VINYL Audio: EXCELLENT
But as close to 'as-new' sound quality you are likely to find - there is a little touch of surface on the run-ins/run-outs and the occasional background noise/crackle between the tracks but nothing particularly intrusive otherwise, it plays beautifully with no major audio issues of note - no scratches and no clicks or pops.
Side One is open, loose and experimental in structure - way "out-there" for 1960 - with deep bass (quite muggy in places) and high treble (the flute is incredibly loud and sharp).
The early (1956) tracks on Side Two are more tradition big-band numbers which really swing.
All-told, another fantastic release from The Arkestra

The original thick card matt cover is clean and unmarked with no splits and just a little rubbing to the colour on the surfaces and spine
