SUN CITY GIRLS

Sun City Girls

Original US LP released on Placebo Records in 1984.

An eclectic mix of every musical style one can think of -- demented surf, Indian and Asian improvisation, free-form noise, fractured folk, you name it -- with doses of kabuki theater, shadow puppetry, and maverick guerilla stagecraft thrown in, the avant-everything Sun City Girls are a fiercely independent and experimental trio whose only credo seems to be to continually stretch boundaries while remaining amazingly inclusive, a process that has led to a dizzying array of in the past 20 years.  Sun City Girls first performed under that name in 1981, and after morphing into the short-lived Paris 1942 (with former Velvet Underground drummer Maureen Tucker), the group emerged as a trio with brothers Alan Bishop and Richard Bishop and percussionist Charles Gocher in 1982. SCG released their first album, Sun City Girls, in 1984 on Placebo Records, going on to release nearly 30 official albums since then, along with countless limited-edition vinyl, cassette, and CD-R projects, making the group's discography almost impossible to completely document. Throughout its history SCG has remained a challenging, unpredictable, and eclectic musical unit, operating outside the commercially driven aspirations of the mainstream recording industry, and the group has become somewhat of a beacon to independent musicians and artists everywhere.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The now-forgotten Phoenix, AZ label that brought the world the rote hardcore stylings of JFA also launched the recording career of the Sun City Girls. The trio's self-titled 1984 debut sounded nothing like their labelmates and not much like anything else at the time. The closest parameter might have been the early, desert-damaged work of the Meat Puppets, but even at this early stage the Girls were smearing ethnic musics ("Black Tent," "Helwa Shak") with their own sardonic, twisted, and sophisticated world view ("Rappin Head," "The Burning Nerve Ending Magic Trick") like few artists before or since. The fact that the band had been recording more or less constantly since they coalesced from the ashes of a band called Paris, 1942 had already made the Girls a whirling dervish, and several tracks here, including "Caravan of Scars," became staples to which they would consistently return.

--------------------------------------------------------------

They may not be girls, but this elusive trio does hail from Sun City, Arizona. (It's a bit northwest of Phoenix.) From raga-rock to saxophone squawk, the fractious pieces on their hallucinatory debut album convene into coherent groupings beneath Alan Bishop's avant-political rantings. From utterly riveting to impossibly muddled, the seventeen sketchy tracks include "Uncle Jim" (a ranting monologue with jazz guitar and sax); "My Painted Tomb" (a raga with toy piano), the impressive "Your Bible Set off My Smoke Alarm" and "Metaphors in a Mixmaster" (presents free-form guitar improvisation). Bewildering, aggravating and intriguing, Sun City Girls is an imposing bow.

PAYMENT

I would appreciate payment within seven days of the auction’s end. If you want to bid on more of my auctions ending a week later please inform me. I will wait and issue a combined invoice at the close of the second week’s auctions.

However, I am no longer willing to carry combined transactions beyond two weeks and in these cases would appreciate payment promptly after the close of the second week’s auctions.

I am sorry to have to introduce these measures – I always try to be patient and allow buyers to bid on extra auctions and / or delay payment. Unfortunately some buyers have been stretching out transactions to unacceptable lengths so I feel I have no option but to limit ‘carried over’ transactions to two weeks.
