ROCKADELIC RECORDS RE RRLP 19
On “Suddenly,” all the right ingredients are in place. First of all, one cannot help but to notice the menacing cover, what with its disturbing combination of adolescent monks and human skulls. This woeful front piece, which more than likely comes from some documentary or other about Latin America, is the perfect accompaniment to the music of “Suddenly” - a gloomy blend of fuzzy, psychedelic acid rock and melancholic ballads. “Suddenly” at once sounds quintessentially ‘70s, while at the same time Sudden Death’s most famous product has a futurist lilt to it which gives a glimpse of the eventual shape and sound of doom metal.
“Suddenly” begins with the reverb-heavy “Come Away With Me,” a sad-sounding song that promotes peaceful living and love. “Come Away With Me” contains plenty of hippie-era songwriting, and its warm guitar and echo-heavy texture do much to paint “Come Away With Me” as a pleasant trip. On the other end of the spectrum, “Leather Woman,” the sixth track, shows this power trio at their most tough with a solid central riff and a backbeat groove that is undeniably amiable to the ears. “Leather Woman” bears a lot of similarities with “Sad Wings of Destiny”-era Judas Priest, or rather it’s the other way around.
“Suddenly” pairs the hard rocking nature of “Leather Woman” with other like-minded tracks such as the galloping “My Time Is Over” and the expletive-laden “Country Livin’.” The latter track not only contains several moments wherein the word “motherfucking” is used for a startling affect, but its vituperative angst is eerily reminiscent of the combative records of The MC5. Not to be outdone, “Crazy Lady,” the record’s eighth and final track, is a hyper, pseudo-punk ditty that shows the influences of Deep Purple, arguably heavy metal’s most frequently overlooked progenitor.
