When Christian Rock was still off the radar to most of the general population, and Christian metal was only beginning to emerge within a small sub-culture, Stryper shocked the world and the church by releasing this musically tight and hard-rocking debut.
While they weren't the first (Rez Band and Messiah Prophet Band predated them), their song writing and production quality were far beyond what the Christian labels had produced (or would, for many years).
The songs on this debut are powered by driving rhythms, ripping dual guitars, multi-layered harmonies, and deep hooks that are still as powerful today as the day they were released. While Stryper's songwriting talents progressed on later albums, the raw quality and energy of this first lp was unequaled. I have never been a fan of their ballads, but it's undeniable that they could pull them off better than the best of the time, proving their versatility and range.
The message is undeniably Christian. We could debate endlessly about the intent, but I think it's better to enjoy the music for what it is. And, in my opinion, it is extremely well written and remains fresh and enjoyable to this day.
