Opening fire with the hard rocking "Brighton rock", which features fantastic Brian May's performance, and following with the chic and jazzy "Killer queen", "Sheer heart attack" looks like a varied LP, and it's the first album that included some Queen hits.
The hard rock (Stone cold crazy, Now I'm here, Tenement funster), gets blended with more jazzy feel (Bring back that Leroy Brown), and the precious (Dear friends, Lily of the valley).
Other great tunes like "She makes me (stormtrooper in stilettoes)", "Flick of the wrist", "Misfire" or "In the lap of the gods" complete another huge album from a band at the top of their game.
The album opens up with “Brighton Rock”. A song about a married man’s affair with a younger woman while on holiday in the southern English town of Brighton. Freddie Mercury alters his voice to represent both sides of the extramarital couple. Half way in Brian May kicks in with a rare guitar solo. Showing his proficiency as a guitarist, he reminds you why he is rightfully considered one of the greats. The song is a great mix of prog and straight up rock. Next up is “Killer Queen”. You’ve heard it on the radio plenty. You know it’s good. Need we say more?
The next three songs flow together seamlessly forming a medley of sorts. You get drummer Roger Taylor’s “Tenement Funster” which is an okay rocker. “Flick of the Wrist” which sounds like an early version of “Death on Two Legs” and ending with the proggy piano ballad “Lily of the Valley”.
The first side ends with “Now I’m Here”, a straight ahead rock song about touring with the band Mott the Hoople.
Side two opens up with the epic prog of “In the Lap of the Gods”. It sounds like a missing track from Queen II. You got the wails of Roger Taylor, who had the highest octave range in the band. That’s right, even higher than Freddie Mercury! Soaring pianos! Oohs and ahhs! Freddie’s voice studio altered to sound as if he is one of the Gods. Then we are given a 180 turn with “Stone Cold Crazy”. It rocks enough that Metallica covered it. Then we get another 180 turn with the somber, slight piano ballad “Dear Friends”. This is unfortunately where the song quality drops off. There’s the non offensive, but correctly titled John Deacon tune “Misfire”. The band makes a passable attempt at ragtime with “Bring Back That Leroy Brown” which I imagine is a tribute to Jim Croce, who died in a plane crash the previous year. Then there is “She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes)” classic Queen all the way... Then the album it closes with another epic: “In the Lap of the Gods…revisited” is everything you expect from Queen during this era of output. You can definitely hear “We Will Rock You\We Are the Champions” in their future with this one. A magnificent tune which has been criminally ignored over the years.
Too sum up, one of their best. If you like Queen, this album is essential.
