Label Condition: Both look fantastic: ultra clean, fresh and attractive examples that show only a couple of three very light and faint spindle marks that show little. Another from the superb collection of hardly played records owned from new by just one person. Played sparingly on a quality stereo system.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Stephen Stills’ debut masterpiece and one of the truly great ‘solo’ classics from this period - a five star recording in every department. A highly inventive and successful time for the man, in the space of a couple of years he made two solo albums, released the superb Manassas double set and was part of CSNY, his fellow colleagues make guest appearances on this album too amongst a host of others including Hendrix, Clapton and Ringo Starr. This sublime release proves Stills as a highly talented musician and this classic is varied, covering Memphis soul, folk, blues, rock and even pop. The opening track is a trademark diamond of his and all-round this album was never bettered. The only real surprise it made only 30 in the UK, so not quite selling quite in the numbers it really justified, hence the world is hardly awash with UK originals. This is a strong example with a gorgeous fully laminated cover and a hardly played record that sounds simply fantastic. It even includes it’s original inner sleeve which is date-coded 0171, so very early indeed (please see this detail in close-up).

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this being somewhat critical. A single format and laminated both sides. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Lamination – Front & Back: One of the most beautiful pieces of artwork to be put on to an album cover and this one does it near maximum justice. This one is fully laminated, not all were, I have seen several 2401004 originals with fully matt covers. The laminate has superb shine, freshness and clarity so the lovely artwork is seen to near maximum advantage. This one is still very white and unaged with few marks and no toning. Even under light, barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling with any record rim impression minimal and very faint indeed. Some very fine and faint edge hairline creases that few, if any will ever avoid totally and only just one half moon type surface crease on the back and a couple on the front. Any lifting is minimal and hardly even registers with a fine trace on the very spine edge – being a white area, it shows little. Nothing of any note spoils this magnificent cover, the front artwork especially looks superb and is one of the loveliest covers from this vintage period.

Top Edge: No wear but a couple of tiny, gentle and mild surface dinks towards the left corner – the word ‘dinks’ being probably too strong a word for these. Full laminate retention and still very smooth and unscuffed to fingertip.

Bottom Edge: Nigh on perfect, as above minus the two tiny ‘dinks’.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Very clean and sharp, with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and quite straight, there is a little fairly mild compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the laminate which solid, ultra clear and uncracked, and even this retains a fine shine and again, very smooth to the fingertip with no scuffs, abrasions or peeling.

Corners: All in superb shape with barely any hints of rubbing with just the odd minute tip semi-crease (this being critical again). All retain excellent to near mint shape.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all-round example of this classic early-70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find significantly better. This attractive example should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: moderate record impression and some mildish crinkle but not heavy creasing. Both the window circles are crisp and very sharp and the lining secure and very clear with minimal crinkle. Some fairly modest darkening on the edges with the adhesive again the culprit – few avoid this. This date coded 0171, so very early indeed (this detail seen in close-up).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): very clean and shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Any surface marks are ultra fine and faint – whispy traces only that have no effect on sound of course – these only seen under bright, angled light. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a very impressive clean record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very early ‘Plum’ original plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. No damaging heavy-tracking mono record players have been anywhere near this superbly preserved record. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful copy. This one will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

End Piece: The words ‘classic’ and ‘masterpiece’ are often overused, but I make no apology for using them on this one. A truly magnificent album that any music lover could not fail to like. Stills was inspired on this album and he rarely again reached such levels of brilliance as a solo artist again, although his second album I rate highly too (this currently on offer on Plum as well). This copy does it near full justice and most fans will treasure it.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
