This happens to be our candidate for the best album of the 1970's (well, let's face it: not much of a competition there): incredible musicianship; inventive tunes; creative and evocative lyrics; innovative arrangements; danceable, rocking, funky tunes with the message and simple, elegant and contagious groove that just won't stop. It is incredible that a music of such a soulful and exuberant nature could be created by two white-bread Yanks. Fagan and Becker were George and Ira Gershwin of the late 20th Century. And then, of course, there is this gorgeous Mobile Fidelity sound that makes you feel as if you were sitting right on Donald Fagen's vocal cords as he is singing. Incredible!!! This is not sound; this is ADVENTURE in sound. Track listing: Black Friday - Bad Sneakers - Rose Darling - Daddy don't live in that New York City no more - Doctor Wu - Everyone's gone to the movies - Your gold teeth II - Chain Lightning - Any world (that I am welcome to) - Throw back the little ones (no less than half of this album wound up in various Steely Dan compilations and "best of" anthologies)

Here's what Donald Fagen had to say about Steely Dan's Katy Lied album: "Each song is seen from a different view point. Some I imagine have an idealistic tone to them, while others are someone who is obviously suicidal. Obviously the narrator...is really in the deep stages of severe depression. And of course, I probably was when I was performing them." Such is the case with the CD's lead track, "Black Friday."

The recording features two members of Toto in keyboardist David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro, whose blues shuffle lurches while the main character contemplates digging a hole and crawling inside because of the impending doom of the upcoming day. Slaughter is on the way and he has already made preparations for his exit, potentially going so far as to alter his identity in order to escape the possible consequences. Ready for life on the run, he plans to "collect everything" he is owed and "let the world pass by," and, pleading for the Lord not to let disaster find him, he wants an archbishop to sanctify him but has even left himself an exit in that case ("If he don't come across, I'm gonna let it roll").

This dynamic singalong broke the top forty in the United States and the chart placement confirms that Becker and Fagen were able to allay intergenerational superstitions (such as those symbolized by Friday the 13th) onto wax, linking all listeners together in a sociological (and, ultimately, musical) way.

·       CONDITION:

·       THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       THE COVER

COVER IS NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a minor wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
