Label Conditions: Both in fantastic condition, very clean, fresh and attractive with minimal trace of any spindle marks. One of rocks most beautiful label designs in sublime condition.

Rarity: Pegasus first issues are far more elusive than the Mooncrest repressings. But that is only half the story, early copies of this brilliant folk-rock album included a lavish gold block gatefold cover. Many see the lovely detail tarnished, dulled and eroded. The book and inner sleeve often torn or damaged. This cover has survived in super condition as-seen, and to date it’s one of the finest I have seen.

Brief Info: The third Steeleye Span album and last to feature Ashley Hutchings. It features more traditional acoustic music than previous and is another gem. Three albums to this point available on five labels, only after this did they find stability on Chrysalis. The cover is beautifully designed and lavish, apparently the band paid for much of its manufacture and lost money on every copy sold. Seldom seen on the original short-lived Pegasus label and with that gorgeous cover so clean and fresh, this a work-of-art when seen with so little wear or ageing. The record looks little played and offers lovely clean sound, it was a joy to play-grade, clearly less easy with more delicate music. Still one of my favourite folk-rock bands, this early one in their vast catalogue is simply lovely.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and wonderfully lavish. An unlaminated gatefold cover that included an 8-page booklet, this one never adhered to the cover, so naturally seperated which is far better for viewing. The cover is impressively gold blocked on front, back and spine with embossing and textured surfaces that look leather-like. It apparently cost a fortune to manufacture and was supplemented by the band themselves at a loss, this did not sell in vast numbers and every copy sold left them out-of-pocket. The book was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and includes the decorative graphic inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: My pictures do not do this cover justice – the gold block is superb, even stunning retaining beautiful shine with barely any wear. There is a gentle surface mark only on the front seen gently under light. The only traces of rubbing on the very edges here-and there with the only light crease on the bottom front left corner. The lack of grubbiness and fading is great news, the back has the original Pegasus logo, also gold block with fine embossing, this also pristine. To manufacture a record cover like this these days would cost a fortune these days, this is a piece of classic record cover art.

Cover Inner Gatefold & Book: The inside is practically as-made, as stated, the book was never attached to this one. So no glue smears or puncture marks, so this one being separate is correct and definitive. The 8-page book itself is near perfect and both the original staples are untarnished and totally unloosened. A mere trace of set-off on the very edges of the covers from the ink in the centrefold where it was stored. Mainly clean, uncreased and looking lovely, the quality of the paper is immediately apparent and will seldom be found better. When held to light the weave of the paper and its watermarks can be seen, this is class, pure class. All the pages are seen in my pictures.

Top & Bottom Edges: All straight, flat and flush with any rubbing mainly fine, patchy and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear or thickening, not folded quite central with the back entrance edges wider than the front, that far from unusual. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A truly STUNNING spine with complex gold block decoration, it has to be one of the most lavish and complex spine ever printed on to album cover, my pictures could never do this full justice. This is immaculate and has the rarer original PEG 9 catalogue number. The surface totally unworn with the gold blocking simply magnificent, it even retains incredible fresh shine with none lost to erosion or damage at all. A solid, straight, uncompressed spine, just a gentle hint of a dink at the very bottom corner. All text and decoration in embossed gold block, this is cover spine art in a different league and the word ‘lavish’ hardly does it justice. This really has to be seen for real.

Corners: Minimal tip rubbing at all which for this cover is very unusual. A light crease on the bottom left from a gentle knock in the past the only minor blemish, because that apart, this cover is exceptional. Excellent shape is mostly retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this beautiful early 1970’s cover, a real work of art displaying imagination and without thought of profit-making. One that will prove difficult to find better, the gold block detail is immense and seldom used on covers. This beautiful item should please many collectors, finding it beter will prove very difficult indeed.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): only marked down from near mint for a fine, small and neat bottom edge repair by myself to stop it widening, this done by myself and it barely even registers. An unlined inner with a top recessed opening and clearly fragile. Clean, fresh with no rubbing or creasing, any trace of rim impression ultra faint. This early original was constructed using external flipbacks, both are immaculate. This will also prove hard to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and this hardly does it full justice, I am certain this has been hardly played. A very fine visual copy that is solidly pressed and plays beautifully. Under light, some dulling is seen within the pressing, any actual usage marks minimal, it retains fine shine. Viewed in average room light, little shows. This could be a label and record with varying pressing quality, but this one was a delight and to date one of the cleanest sounding copies of this fragile album I have heard. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This folk-rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies, especially the rarer Pegasus ones, will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
