Brief Info: Brilliant debut album by this heavy blues rock band. They sound very similar to early Jethro Tull and Blodwyn Pig, fans of those will treasure this slightly lesser lauded band from the same era. A couple of classic blues standards are included with mostly self-written material, and I regard this as a mini-classic. This a rare mono original, it has a few light surface marks or paper scuffs, but this mostly plays impressively, a little gentle surface sound here-and-there on the odd quieter area, but for a vintage mono record, it has survived generally well. Not for absolute sound purists, but this elusive gem will please many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. The front is single thickness and the record enters inside the gatefold middle. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. The CBS promotional inner sleeve is included as seen.

Cover Front: Another wear-prone cover seldom seen much above very good. Overall, this one has fared pretty well with most wear – and not a great deal – on the spine edge. Any rub traces gentle, small and light, same for creasing of which there is little and also light. A little corner tip rubbing and traces on the left edge. Given this is single thickness card, a pleasing front.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, the lack of ring wear is unusually good news. A gentle hint of waviness being critical, but little spoils this unforgiving back surface.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very impressive with little to fault at all.

Top Edges: Neat, flush with barely little wear, any thickening or burring light seen viewed end-on.

Bottom Edges: Largely the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Again, mainly as above.

Spine and Text: A fragile thin, single thickness spine that has little chance of surviving unscathed. Still mainly solid and straight, but like most of these types, a little understrength. These tend to crease and rub, and this has a little, but most text has survived, the centre band name has eroded more, and there is some fine general rubbing as seen. But folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The bottom corner has thinned and rubbed, the top has fared better.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with fine to very shape retained, no major knocks, any evidence of dinking small and light. As stated, the most wear is on the spine bottom, but even that is hardly big or major.

Cover Summary: A little wear yes, but this is another highly unforgiving central storage cover that were quite popular with CBS at this time, they are seldom seen without major wear and even significant damage. I consider this attractive little-worn example above average and still looking attractive on all the important areas especially. Not one seen often, this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): with very little to fault. A vintage unlined CBS promotional inner with just one smallish corner crease and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Minimal discolouration or ageing. These inners date from the late 1960s.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(+): still a fine visual copy that is clean with nice shine and quite heavly pressed. A copy with some mostly fine surface marks or paper scuffs, but these superficial, there are no penetrating stylus scratches on a perilous mono record. Those who still bought these quite late mono albums did so to play on the appropriate record players of the time, and fewer escape without marks or issues. This record still offers very fine sound with most of any minor and infrequent surface sound within the pressing. A little dulling impurity is seen under light in the vinyl that has nothing whatsoever to do with wear. Visually not for purists, but this should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent blues-rock album plays mostly above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Yes a little sporadic gentle surface sound here-and-there on the odd quiet passage, but generally offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is still very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed, dynamic mono sound. Punchy and warm with no tracking issues*, only minor, mostly gentle reminders of what is being played, a vintage mono record. As stated further up, this band sound VERY similar to early Jethro Tull and Blodwyn Pig, and I was very impressed with this scarce debut. Recorded quite loud and full-on, this has real punch and sonic delivery, it provides a real test for any system to handle. Little, if indeed anything of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album, sometimes a few blemishes on record this age and mode are almost expected, the visual marks largely ignored. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and still merits high recommendation – but not for perfectionists.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
