Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh and attractive with only a small few very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. More unusually for a relatively popular album, this copy looks hardly played.

Rarity: Moderate: in terms of this massively collectable label, this is certainly one of the more common titles. However, finding them with a lovely fresh, clean and barely worn cover is a different matter. Being unprotected and white, this is more often seen very grubby and aged. Also for those who bought it initially, many played it to destruction. This album actually charted and peaked at No. 5 in the UK album charts and sold well. That being a rare exception to rule on this label that specialised in new, more obscure, or largely progressive, folk or jazz acts. Many of which sold in tiny numbers with some titles rarely seen or offered.

Brief Info: Album number five, and by now, their popularity was rising fast. With a popular hit single in ‘Paper Plane’, included on this album, it helped push sales up to the dizzy heights of No. 5 in the UK album charts. It was their first for Vertigo after departing from Pye, it was the only one issued on the Swirl format. This became one of the best selling albums on this cult label, so not one of the harder to ones to actually find. Quo were a quite new act with a full-on sound that people warmed to quickly. Along with the follow-up ‘Hello’, those are my two favourite albums by them. As ever, conditions are the major factor, and if the less rare Spirals are needed or to be upgraded, only near the best will do. This is a super all-round example with a rare cleaner cover than most around, a very fine swirl inner sleeve and the record appearing hardly played and offering lovely clean sound throughout. Do not underestimate how difficult finding such copies are these days.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited. This is a crucial factor and totally correct for a first printing of the Spiral originals. Reprintings with the new Spaceship label copies had covers printed by Howards, and are probably easier to find in better condition being slightly less old (but they are wrong for Swirl copies, so beware). Includes the late swirl inner sleeve with the softer lining.

Cover Front: Clean and fresh looking with minimal hints of grubbiness to the white areas. A little quite mild spine edge creasing. Few age this well, the lack of yellowing or surface rubbing being major pluses.

Cover Back: Even better if anything, a gentle thumb semi-crease near the top left, but not a great deal else bar a super-faint sticker residue trace near the top edge, it hardly registers with no surface pulling or damage.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, practically as made.

Top Edges: Both in stunning condition: very straight, clean, unrubbed and flush.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with just a few traces of manufacture adhesive smearing seen viewed end-on.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a tucked and folded real edge, again white and with minimal hint of toning or discolour – slight traces being critical right up close. The open storage back is superb: clean, very sharp with hardly any wear at all. The lack of thickening or burring is quite unusual to see, no trimming or enhancements guaranteed, in fact the outer back edge is slightly wider than the inside edge in manufacture to reiterate the fact.

Spine and Text: A lovely spine: solid, quite thick and straight with minimal compression or blemishing. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text near perfect with just the odd tiny clip and the surface and folds show minimal discolour or grubbiness.

Corners: Hardly any traces of tip wear or creasing, excellent shape or better retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this unforgiving large white area 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Often seen very yellowed or browned from age or nicotine, this has nothing like that at all. With just faint minor blemishes here-and-there, this 42-year-old cover, this beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a superb, and correct version for this album. It has the correct later type soft lining rather than the heavier polylining. Often removed from this album to put with the rarer earlier titles, but it would be wrong with this lining inside. So Piledrive is often sold minus any swirl inner at all. It has two perfect crisp and totally undamaged window circles, intact lining, barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Only very gently aged with traces of edge darkening, far less than ususual.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very light, few and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Wispy traces and no stylus scratches, this one so often heavily played, this proved a popular Spiral. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rousing Quo classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything noted at all, and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available first issue copies will outperform this one significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment – the difference in this cover is very apparent. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – this really is Status Quo at their brilliant best with top quality songs and even including an impressive version of The Doors ‘Roadhouse Blues’. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
