At Storyville captures tenor saxophonist Stan Getz in October 1951 at the height of his creative abilities. Of course, this isn't to say that Getz's music ever lacked originality in his later years. However, this live date features the youthful drive and musical eagerness lost in some of Getz's '80s and early-'90s releases (He died in 1991). There is nothing like hearing a jazz giant brimming with energy and vitality. Despite the criticism that Getz's playing was cold or overly detached at times, this music shows a hot horn player blazing through many of the album's 6 tracks. These sessions also mark one of the few times that this particular lineup performed together. Less than a month after this album was recorded, the quintet disbanded, with Getz taking work with NBC's studio orchestra and pianist Al Haig going on a long musical hiatus. Sadly, drummer Tiny Kahn died just two years after this performance. All this makes this disc that much more precious.

(b)            The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Back cover has some yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting; from what we could determine, these minor stains can be easily and effortlessly cleaned up after the shrink wrap has been removed; they do not appear to be permanent, indelible stains)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots
