Label/Format: Island – original orange eyeball format with deep inner ridge and heavily textured surfaces. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both in fantastic conditions: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Gorgeous real pastel pink colour with no grubbiness or handling marks, both will almost remind of new. The faint spindle marks only visible with scrutiny under light. Although the cover has some wear, the record has barely any and these labels and playing surfaces will prove difficult to find better. Certainly worthy of a second look.

Cat Number: ILPS 9098.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A very impressive 164 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The genuine first pressings with the original ‘black’ cover are quite rare – again the price guides are laughable. Available only briefly on the orange eyeball format before being repressed through the constant Island label changes between 1969 and 1970, this is never easy to find with a record so clearly lightly played. This includes the blacker coloured cover that was soon changed to a green-hued grey colour that looks very different although the artwork remained the same, but later ones dropped the gatefold design. When this record is seen so little played and with stunning labels, it’s a thing of real beauty. This copy’s cover has some wear, mainly to othe edges, but is still a highly presentable, even attractive example of the first-made. Overall, a pretty rare early Island classic

Brief Info: With a clue in the title, this was Spooky Tooth’s second album. Regarded by many as their best ever, ‘Two’ is a heavy blues-rock album with elements of prog. A band that changed their line-up frequently, this early incarnation was also regarded as their finest. First-pressed copies of this one are hard to find, and this actual record is a beauty. Heavily pressed with gorgeous labels, clean playing surfaces and sound. The original ‘black’ coloured cover has some edge rubbing and a few marks, but overall remains attractive also and much rarer than the paler later printings. Another vintage Island classic that will please many collectors.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: VG++ an unlaminated gatefold format with the much blacker coloured artwork on the front and back. Later printings were more grey with a green tinge, overall much paler and looking very different. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day.

Cover Front: The front shows little wear and retains a lovely deep rich colour with only faint traces of rubbing and barely any creasing at all. Slight toning traces on the extreme edges and one tone spot above the ‘K’ in Spooky near the top edge. Slight edge rubbing just encroaches into view mostly near the spine. A highly respectable example of this the most cherished of the Spooky Tooth covers.

Cover Back: The back is similar in most respects with the addition of a price sticker outline mark. This has NOT removed any ink but the tack from this sticker has highlighted the blue-black hue of the cover which is seen near the top right corner. The odd tiny tone mark and again traces around the extreme edges. A fine and faint record impression rub shows little, a little more with scrutiny under light and again, barely any creasing at all.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Slight age toning which is very faint indeed, consistent so having barely any visual impact. A small crease on the bottom of the hinge fold. Little else to fault and this again looks nice.

Top Edges: Moderate rubbing to both.

Bottom Edges: As above, maybe a little more. As both edges are only lightly coloured, again, this has little visual impact.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering and guaranteed, untrimmed. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, just the bottom corner slightly ‘softened’. Straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. Some patchy rubbing on folds and more near the corners. This cover did not have any text printed but the majority of the artwork is still present and intact.

Corners: All corners have rubbed but only lightly bar the bottom left which has moderate rubbing and slightly rounded. This one apart, the others retain fine neat shape.

Cover Summary: A highly respectable all round example of this wear-prone late 60’s cover, one that will prove fairly difficult to find much better. With the main faces appearing attractive and most wear on the edges, this scarce original item should please many collectors but not the more discerning. However, the record may well do but if slightly ‘down’ cover is an issue, do not bid, but remember, you cannot play a cover.

The Inner: The polylined inner is included which has age toned but shows little other wear apart from mild ruffling and no heavy creasing. The window very neat indeed with clear lining. Edges unsplit and includes the patented UK text and ‘Foreign Patents Pending’.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++, A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed in the typical early Island style. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and few blemishes on what are exceptional playing surfaces. Collectors will know the state many of these early albums are seen in, often played on less than wonderful early record players that left marks and inflicted terrible damage to the grooves. This has clearly avoided such mistreatment and abuse and plays with super sound. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful and much rarer first pressed record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no signficicant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Not all early Island albums were top pressings and could often prove variable, but this one failed to disappoint and was an immensely enjoyable listen. Few copies will outperform this earliest pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This actual record will prove very difficult to find significantly better as a very first issue and can be strongly recommended on this basis alone.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
