this is the original 1974 Canadian Daffodil (DAF 10047) pressing of the masterpiece LIES TO LIVE BY by THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS.  what can i say about this highly original, inventive monster, it´s got more incredible guitar than you could ever want, top songwriting, amazing conception, batches of mellotron...  one of my all time faves, absolutely essential.   condtion ( cover / lp )  :  VG+ / VG+   the lp is actually still about as nice as it gets, top EX if not for two issues on side two: a glue line across the first minute or so from some old inner sleeve which makes a faint swishing sound, and a one mintue section at the beginning of the last suite which has a few faint pops which do not even begin to distract in any way (a faint little  intermittent scratch next to a small mark which is not at all audible).  apart from these two small areas it really couldn't be nicer.   the labels are perfect.  no spindle marks (or mark of any kind), no prints, no wear; untouched.

apart from the lightest spine and shelf wear (nothing even remotely serious), the cover couldn't really be nicer either: completely sharp, crisp, vivid and tight. the inside of the gatefold is perfect.

the goldmine grading scale (including EX grades):

M  perfect!  a mint record should look like it has just left the manufacturer, with NO flaws whatsoever.  it should look as though it has never been handled, with absolutely no wear to the cover or record period!  the age of the record has nothing to do with it; a mint record from 1969 should look like a mint record from 2009.  99% percent of the time, only sealed or unplayed lps will be given this grade, and even then only when the pressings are of high quality.
a mint cover should appear to have never had a record inside it.  no wear to the corners or marring of any sort whatsoever.

M-  records that appear virtually flawless; a very minor scuff and very little else can appear on the vinyl (this will most likely have occurred during packaging or removing the record from the inner sleeve); overall it has always been handled with extreme care. it should play without any noise whatsoever over the flaw, which also should be virtually impossible to see without a bright light.  if a scuff covers more than a few tracks and can be seen it will not be M-
the cover should be virtually perfect, with only minor signs of wear and or age.  there may be minor impressions (due to the outer edge of the vinyl resting inside), no ring wear however; perhaps the faintest touch of fading or a couple of the most minor creases imaginable (such as the tiny ones eminating from the spine or seams on laminated imports).  the artwork should be as close to perfect as can be; creases across the corners or any whitening or wear on the seams or spine are not acceptible.

  EX  there may be a handful of inaudible scuffs or hairlines, or a slightly visible (though still very minor) mark or two, whichy will not cover more than 15% of the playing surface, and of course play without any audible artifact of any kind.  in other words, it will play M- throughout; no scratches will exist on an EX record! (if any break in the grooves are present, they are scratches, and may be heard as soft clicks or even pops; this lp would never be graded higher than VG+, no matter how minor.)  the record will still retain all of the gloss, sheen and lustre, and is a piece of vinyl which will easily please most serious, critical collectors; it will never need to be upgraded. the cover should still be as close to perfect as it gets.  there may be some impressions but no actual ring or ink wear; possibly a bit of creasing on the corners, but nothing wrinkled and obtrusive in any way.  the corners may also show a touch of white (where the artwork pasted slick was), but it will be slight.  of course no seam splits, writing or tape anywhere.

VG+  the lp may show just a touch of wear, surface scuffs, a faint layer of (nearly always inaudible) hairlines, or some very light scratches.  the vinyl should still have the overwhelming majority of the lustre, sheen and gloss, but the minor flaws which exist will be noticeable to the naked eye.  most VG+ records should still play like a NM record nearly all of the time; it will have only one or two minor issues, which will not distract from the enjoyment of the lp in any meaningful way (ie: apart from the random stray click or pop or a touch of faint background crackle in a couple brief spots).  if an lp had no visible scuffs or defects, yet a careless needle scratch causes a break in the grooves, this may reduce the lp from M- or EX to this grade, depending on its size and audibility.  a VG+ record is still about as nice as it gets, better than 90-95% of the lps in the world!
the cover should be very clean and crisp, but may have small writing on it (magic marker will not cut it).  the artwork should look clean with slightly more aging;  flat white paper will be somewhat yellow, yet there will be no stains or mildew from water damage.  there may be some minor wear to the seams or spine, but no tears or holes popping through.   the corners will be slightly dog eared, yet with no crackly bends defacing the artwork.  there may be slight ring wear, but it should not be at all distracting.  in essence, a VG+ cover should have no more than 3 flaws mentioned.

VG  the record will appear well played but still have much luster.  the vinyl may be slightly faded from play, yet appear to have been handled as carefully as could have been helped by someone who is not a collector.  records that get continuous playing over time will start to deteriorate; more and more surface scuffs and scratches accumulate, and audible sound defects will be heard.  they should not overpower the dynamics of the music.  with VG records, the surface noise will be minor crackle or a slight hiss, but should only be heard in between tracks or in low musical passages.  minor pops and crackles may exist, but they should be isolated and no more than a handful of revolutions long, and there shouldn't be many of them.
the cover will look somewhat worn and used.  there may be some seam splitting, but it should still be reasonable.   there will be some ring wear where the ink has begun to wear off, but should not be totally white or impact the entire cover.  there may be some writing in a small spot or two (still not LARGE letters in magic marker), or it may look a bit aged and yellowish due to contaminations in the air (such as cigarette smoke). it is still quite nice overall, there is just a more substantial (yet still minor) flaw or two preventing it from being a nice VG+.

i will not list anything with a grade lower than this, ever!
