OK, folks, what we have here is a monumentally rare and just-about-unheard-of (often only rumored to exist) PARTIALLY UNCENSORED version of this great West Coast psych album with the “offensive” words PARTIALLY visible, not entirely taken out by the censor’s cruel hand.
What happened?!? How did this mega-rarity come about? Obviously, the psychedelic drawing which graces the cover originally concealed among its numerous, intricate details and ornaments a few casual expletives that could have been deemed offensive back in 1968 (and which eBay still considers offensive, which is why we are unable to actually show you the images of the uncensored phrases on the cover) .
In fact, only one phrase – so small you will have to use magnifying glass – was deemed offensive (“Big F***ing Deal”). The same phrase appears on BOTH sides of the cover.
After the initial (PROBABLY PROMO-ONLY) press run was completed, someone at the label (mind you, this was Capitol Records – the same label that gave us the Beatles’ “Butcher Cover”) realized that the cover contains a – gasp! – expletive, all hell done broke loose!!! The corporate censors immediately ordered that all already pressed, but not yet distributed, copies of the album be carefully reviewed and that the tiny word (measuring barely 1 x 3 millimeters in size and barely visible with a naked eye) BE SCRATCHED OUT BY HAND. Thousands of covers already prepared for shipment to the distributors and retailers had to be scratched out, and pronto! All this corporate hysteria for one tiny, practically microscopic, word. Lenny Bruce must have been rolling in his grave at the sight of this corporate charade.
Almost all “censored” (scratched) copies of the cover have the offensive words scratched out, but - no - this one does not. On this one, the two words are crossed over with the red ballpoint pen, leaving parts of the tiny words clearly visible.
These “unscratched” copies are offered on (or off ) eBay only once in a blue moon. Bid now, or scratch your head later!
Otherwise, this is a classic piece of West-Coast post-psychedelia, and a gorgeous mix of jazz, funk, oriental elements, psych ornamentation, folk, country and everything else tossed in for good measure.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The album comes with its original insert intact
(c) The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3
- The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in thick black marker, about 1/4 x 4 inches in size)
- Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the back panel (this affects ONLY the paper slick, not the cardboard base itself)
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold
- Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged
- The cover has a few pressure points and lines (as if someone attempted to write on it with the ballpoint pen, but ran out of ink)
- Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side and bottom seam (nothing significant)
- Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners.
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
- No stamps
- No peel-off marks
- No stains
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No glue traces or wax residue.
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
