Sonic Attack 7" promo one sided single + original cloth bag sleeve + (original?) paper sleeve
The A side label has simply 'Sonic Attack' & Hawkwind in block black lettering. The B side label is plain ungrooved black with an anti-skid black flat label.
Those of you with very good eyesight will notice the Liberty / United Artists copyright information around the perimeter of the label from about 10 O'clock to 3 O'clock with writing credit for Michael Moorcock.
For some reason the label has been laminated. It is usual to have this lamination peeled off totally or partially since it was cheaply produced (it was a promo or some say a test press), and to some it is a proof of originality. This label has the lamination partially peeled off while the central part stays unpeeled in the center area (the whole diameter). I can post more pictures upon request.
The vinyl, is in great shiny condition, with just some light cosmetic surface marks to show for being a thirty five year old Hawkwind 7". I never played it as i don't have a turntable and i just collect vinyls (i play the CDs), but i can tell there are some faint lines. It was usual for this record to be damaged in the original cloth bag, but this came with a paper inner sleeve. I have kept it, although i will use a better one in the mail (i will include the original in any case). The track itself fades both in & out, so instead of the crunching intro chords to Time We Left, you get the runout groove. My personal judgement would be of an ex- disc, even tough i never saw an ex+ disc or better.
The vinyl is machine stamped with the matrix number WD3637 & the 'KT' tax code in the runoff area, so it is genuinely original.
The cloth bag is ... well, a cloth bag. Similar to coin or mail bag material, it is made from light canvas & reinforce stitched at the opening and the inner of the sides. The same block lettering is used on the bag, only bigger & in red. It has some signs of use (a couple of minimal holes shown in the picture, and some pull on the stich). I bought it as i was told by the hawkfan seller it was an original tossed at a gig by Nik Turner in 1973 in London. To me it is impossible to find a good bag after 4 decades of history. Since there is no M to a cloth, i'd judge that by EX. Please note that the pictures are taken with a mobile phone, and don't do the item justice (and no, the bag isn't grey from dirt).
This incredibly rare disc was only ever distributed in very limited quantities to promote what was anticipated to be the follow up single to Silver Machine but they went with Urban Guerilla instead.
Interestingly, this was issued in May 1973, the same month as the German Amon Duul 'remix' of Lord Of Light / Born To Go.
Whatever the reasons, it wasn't released & Urban Guerilla came out in July instead, only to be withdrawn shortly thereafter. This point signalled the end of Hawkwind as a Top Of The Pops contender, luckily, and they were able to progress from here on without the need for chart compromise single releases.
