SINDELFINGEN - ODGIPIG - NEW 180GM VINYL
LP NEW / MINT & UNPLAYED
One of the odder items of the progressive rock era. Not avant-garde or self-consciously weird, in fact it’s obvious they were attempting to make as grand a progressive rock statement as their limited means would allow them. Obviously produced on a shoestring budget and featuring no keyboards, it sounds like a trad folk band that heard some Yes albums and decided to try that instead. So you’ll have some sprightly English folk melodies and suddenly follow it up with some jagged, “out” jazz Jan Akkerman riffs. If all this weren’t enough, the fourth member of the band, Roger Woods, presumably makes up for their dearth of keyboards. His main axe is, of all things, a glockenspiel and he chimes away on it with reckless abandon throughout the album. If I had to answer what I thought was the most glockenspiel-heavy album of all time I wouldn’t even have to think about it for a second: this is it! On top of all that, he also uses audio oscillators—à la Silver Apples or Hawkwind—to create crude, proto-synth tones here and there.
Make no mistake, the album’s no classic but it possesses a quirky charm that does grow on you. Of the 1970s British indie rarities out there it’s one of the ones that’s worth owning, if only because of its accidental originality. Not your usual prog album by a long shot.
