THE STORY

Eric Clapton owned Barberstown Castle Hotel in Straffan, Co.Kildare in the 1980’s.  Mary Farrelly who donated these items, worked for Eric at the time and has fond memories of the amazing after-work parties in the hotel lounge that he would convene after all the guests had gone home or to bed.  Impromptu sessions at the grand piano with Paul Brady (or whatever artist had dropped by on a given night) were a regular occurrence.   Oh to be a fly on the wall in those days!

Eric looked after his staff well and, while under the management of Roger Forrester, he treated Mary and his hotel manager to an all-expenses paid week long trip to London and his studios there.  The “Just One NIght” Tour programme for auction is signed by Eric, by Albert Lee and all his band members at that time: Gary Brooker, Albert Lee, Dave Markee, Henry Spinetti and Chris Stainton.

Thanks to Mary Farrelly for supplying these items for some serious Clapton fan(s) to enjoy!

THE REASON

In post-Celtic Tiger Ireland we still have no Hospice in the Republic for children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions.  The campaign to build its first Children’s Hospice is being led by Jane McKenna of the Laura Lynn Foundation in collaboration with the Children’s Sunshine Home.  To quote Jane who lost both her daughters aged 4 and 15 to childhood illnesses this is about “putting life into a child’s days and not days into a child’s life”.  A dedicated Children’s Hospice for the Republic would provide specialised respite and emergency care for children when they are in the most difficult stages of their illness and provide a peaceful environment for the child to die with dignity, if home is not a possibility.   Northern Ireland has one Children’s Hospice in Belfast - Horizon House – with a second under construction in Fermanagh

Every cent and penny that you can give is so much appreciated by both charities.  All auction proceeds will make a huge difference to the lives of the children and their parents and siblings who must face the most difficult of life’s challenges.  By simply taking the time to read this far you have already begun to support us.  Thank you.

THE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE AUCTION IS PART OF THE TRACTOR ON TOUR 2008 CAMPAIGN,
