Originally released in 2002, this landmark soundtrack finally arrives on vinyl in a 2XLP set and time has only confirmed its place as one of modern cinema's towering achievements. Following his Oscar-winning work on The Fellowship of the Ring, Shore expands the sonic palette to match the fractured storylines of Tolkien's middle chapter. Themes established in the first film return with Sam's gentle motif, the shadowy Ring leitmotif, yet they're interwoven with bold new ideas. The Rohan theme, introduced on hardanger fiddle, is the emotional core of the score: noble, mournful and battle-ready in its different guises. In contrast, Gollum's motif slithers uneasily adding a note of menace whenever he appears. These elements sit alongside orchestral writing and some of the most powerful choral work ever committed to a fantasy score, with London Voices in peak form across tracks like 'Foundations of Stone'. 'Helm's Deep' and 'Isengard Unleashed'. The ethereal side is equally as good. 'Evenstar' shimmers with Elven lyricism, while Emiliana Torrini's haunting 'Gollum's Song' closes the album on an unsettling yet unforgettable note. Shore conceived the trilogy's music as a single symphonic arc, which means this installment occasionally feels unresolved, but that's the nature of the saga's middle act. On vinyl, the score breathes differently: choirs bloom with warmth, strings carry more weight and the dynamic swells have space to unfold without compression. Housed in a handsome gatefold with detailed artwork, this release underscores the magnitude of Shore's achievement.
