Often dismissed as one-hit wonders (actually, they were more of a two hit wonder -- op. ed.) , the Shocking Blue proves that the namesake Dutch band was more than just one (blockbuster) song. The collection, drawn mostly from their 1968-1969 material, is a satisfying psychedelic-pop listen from start to finish -- at least for those who think "Venus" deserved to become an international chart-topper. Although the song, covered with equal success by Stars on 45 in 1981 and Bananarama in 1986, was their only one to make a significant impact on the U.S. pop charts (number one in 1970), the album also includes Dutch hits "Send Me a Postcard" (the first from the new lineup), "Long and Lonesome Road," and "Mighty Joe." (It's been said that "Venus" is the only song in the history of the Billboard pop charts to hit number one three times.) It could be argued that this collection is all you really need as far as Shocking Blue is concerned. Although they wouldn't officially break up until 1974, the hits had pretty much dried up by 1972. Their first Dutch hit, "Lucy Brown Is Back in Town," is the only really notable omission here as it was recorded by the original lineup, before Fred de Wilde was replaced by sultry German-Hungarian Grace Slick-soundalike Mariska Veres -- who quickly became the group's best-known asset (as much for her strong voice as her striking looks). Although it wasn't a hit for the original band -- it wasn't even released as single -- Nirvana would cover "Love Buzz" to fine effect on their 1988 debut, Bleach.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       THE COVER

COVER IS STILL SEALED; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT MINT OR NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++ (A PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP - ABOUT 15% -  IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a neat, round PROMO cutout hole in one of the corners

-        A visible water stain affects the area about 5-6 square inches in bottom right corner; there is a minor structural damage to the cover;  the stain is visible and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover ,  visible yellowish discoloration, a few minor peel-off marks and a slight warp in the affected area. The warp will have absolutely no effect on the record.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a slight warp along the opening side; this will have absolutely no effect on the record.

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam
