The progenitors of the girl-group sound and probably the best known (and The Best!) girl-group of all times (Supremes notwithstanding), Shirelles were a proverbial Alpha and Omega of the Girl-group sound which pretty much defined early 1960's. We have here their very second from 1961. The album includes more Shirelles greatest hits and signature tunes than any other album by the group, including: Mama Said; What a sweet thing that was; Rainbow Valley; Blue Holiday; and many others.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1/4 inch (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           UNLIKE other Shirelles albums from the early ’60, STEREO copies of this album are not believed to exist (we have not seen one in 38 years of collecting records)

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           The record has a small cutout hole punched IN THE LABEL AREA. This – oddly – does not affects the cover, which does NOT have a matching hole in the label area (obviously, the record was matched with a better cover at some point)

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        The cover has a distinct X-shaped, pressure-type cutout stamp. This type of cutout marking was used exclusively by some labels and was more discreet and sensitive than the other types of marking (such as cutout holes or drill marks), as it did not require the cover to be damaged.

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-         Cover has some ring wear. On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 5 (back side)

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent (just a beginning of the split seams on two corners).

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity.

-         Cover has one corner slightly compressed (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover shows some considerable yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
