The age old task of shearing has throughout the years progressed from crude methods used hundreds of years ago to the highly skilled occupation that it is today.
Even before the advent of machine shearing in the latter part of the last century, iron-wristed shearers ere whisking fleeces off at a fantastic rate. The Australian competitive spirit asserted itself, and great battles ere fought on the board. From the first bell in the morning to the last in the afternoon, shearers watched each other like hawks lest one gain the advantage.
This fiery competition pushed tallies up and up, until many sheep owners put a limit on the daily figures. High tallies in some cases meant roughly-handled sheep and limits of 100 or so were frequently imposed.
However, once away from the board, grudges were usually forgotten and the back-breaking toil of the day gave way to friendly conversation and singing. Stories were told of great shearers . . . some highly improbable. The old-timers boasted of their past deeds and the rouseabout and shed hands listened with awe; hoping for the day when they would become shearers, and even perhaps reach the magic hundred.
And so these songs were bon. The combination of factors contributing to their birth will never occur again. They are authentic, Australian, and to me, more exciting each time I sing them. – Denis Gibbons
