SECOND HAND -REALITY LP

Second Hand’s debut is an unnerving and unswerving journey. Mixing the immediacy of a garage band with the pomp and complexity of what would, a few years later, come to be called prog, this still sounds like the landmark recording it was.

Inventive and driven from the explosive opener, A Fairy Tale, Reality’s mash of these seemingly polarised musical sensibilities is no easy listening. The word ‘grower’ could have been invented for this album. It takes a while for Ken Elliot’s prog wailing to sink in, particularly on the brilliant Mainliner, but when it does, it leaves you breathless. Bob Gibbon’s acid-drenched guitar cuts from the vicious to the sublime, often in the same track, but again it takes a while to register how subtle his playing really is. On the apocalyptic The World Will End Yesterday, his phased Floydian licks, responding to the barrage behind him, are inspired. It’s the highlight and deserves its status as an acid rock classic.

Obtuse signatures, shifts of pace and rhythm and some decidedly dark subject matter make Reality an album to savour.

GRADINGS

MINT                         The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.  The cover and any extra items such as lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.  Records advertised, as Sealed or Unplayed will be mint.

EXCELLENT             The record shows some signs of having been played, possibly with light surface marks but there will be very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD +         The record may have scuff marks and signs of some wear but will still play almost perfectly throughout, with only barely detectable crackles or pops.  A slight noise at the beginning is allowable, but the remainder must be nearly flawless.  Definitely no scratches or gouges that a touch with a dry finger can feel. The cover may only have the slightest signs of normal wear.

VERY GOOD            The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD                        The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.  The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

ALL RECORDS ARE PACKED IN PROPER MAILERS WITH STIFFENERS
