This is the landmark 1972 double-album release that paired The Beach Boys' new studio effort, "Carl and the Passions โ So Tough", with their 1966 masterpiece "Pet Sounds". At the time, "Pet Sounds" had been out of print in the US for several years, and Warner Bros./Reprise used this "Specially Priced" 2-record set to reintroduce the classic album to a new generation while promoting the band's new, more soulful rock direction. "So Tough" features the debut of Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar, moving the band away from surf-pop toward a rootsy, R&B-influenced sound. This 1972 pressing is historically significant as it was the first time "Pet Sounds" appeared on the Brother/Reprise label.

FIRST EDITION. This is the original 1972 US pressing, clearly identified by the "Printed in U.S.A." credits on the spine and the 2MS 2083 catalog number. A key highlight for collectors is the presence of the original red-and-white hype sticker ("Specially Priced 2-Record Set"), which is frequently missing or damaged on most copies. This edition is highly sought after because the "Pet Sounds" disc in this specific set is famous among audiophiles for its excellent mono sound quality, often preferred over earlier Capitol pressings. As a "First Edition," it represents the very first appearance of the "So Tough" album in the United States.
