Brief Info: Born Noel Scott Engel, better known as Scott Walker, this was his sixth solo album after the split of The Walker Brothers – that is including the TV series album ‘Scott: Scott Walker Sings Songs from his TV Series’. After the failure of his previous album ‘Scott 4’, the cover again credits him under his well-known stage name ‘Scott Walker’, but it fared no better and was again quickly deleted and went out-of-print for around 25 years. The album was written quickly and was made a little more commercial, but it did not receive favourable reviews and was largely ignored. It proved his last album of new songs until the The Walker Brothers reformed in 1978. Time has reappraised the album favourably and is now considered another great work by this most brilliant of vocalists. Clearly Walker had fallen from favour from his more middle-of-the-road audiences of the time and this album is also something of a ‘lost’ gem. It includes Ester Ofarim singing one song all by herself, that unusual on an artists own album. Seldom seen or offered, this is a very fine copy from one of the greatest singers of his generation.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: I think more than worthy for an incredibly flimsy thin cover. An unlaminated single format with matt textured surfaces. Printed and made in England, includes the 1970 date-coded inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Even more wear-prone than ‘Scott 4’, this is incredibly flimsy and made with very soft textured card, being dark also, few will show in much better all-round condition. This front looks impressive with hardly any rubbing to the lovely fine texturing, yes, some tip rubbing and traces to the edges, but with hardly any creasing or sticker issues, this fragile front will seldom be found much better. Unfaded with any marks few and faint, this has more than withstood the test-of-time.

Cover Back: This back in superb condition given all the facts, most that will surface will have heavy ring wear, rubbing and creasing, this one has largely avoided all with only a little gentle creasing near the top right edge with only very modest visibility. The lack of rubbing and wear to this predominately black textured surface is just so hard to find. But as stated, finding this cover at all is a challenge in its own right.

Top Edge: Thin and flimsy, but still straight with any rubbing confined to the right corner area.

Bottom Edge: Light to moderate patchy rubbing, hardly a surprise on very dark storage edge. Again, flat and straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still sharp, this is very impressive and is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: As solid as any spine like almost could be, straight with any compression light, a little rubbing near the ends, but being white, it registers little. All text is nigh-on perfect and unworn, also nicely centred. Covers like this often have eroded text, so again, this is exceptional taken in context. Any darkening or ageing modestly light as-seen.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with very fine shape mostly retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: ‘Difficult’ hardly covers this one, difficult enough to even find, even more so in very fine all-round condition. With those facts and just enough to politely remind of its considerable age, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: aged only with the usual toning of the white paper, this seldom avoided on inners this age. Hardly creased, only light crinkle. Both window circles neat and undamaged looking as-made, the polylining still quite clear and solidly attached. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This includes the date-code of 1270 (December 1970), exactly the month and year of release, this detail seen in close-up.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with surface traces fine and wispy as seen under bright light. One tiny pressing bump at the end of track two that does hardly anything. Viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers and sound quality is mostly impressive and enjoyable with any polite reminders of what is being played gentle, light and very infrequent. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare and elusive album plays up to and mostly even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, gentle and light, the odd polite reminder of what is being played – a 47-year-old record, so the odd mild tick and crackle trace is so hard to avoid totally. Overall, a clean pressing with no tracking issues*, that magnificent voice fully intact with no break up or clarity loss. Few available copies will outperform this rare original pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive, and sadly overlooked album. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
