Description
First edition mono pressing with gold text on the label, pressed in 1955. There was no later SXL (or SAX) stereo release. I had a very difficult time grading this record because my amplifier (Naim Nait 2) does not have a dedicated mono function, so I'll stick to text rather than a conventional grading. Firstly, there are a couple of light hairlines on both sides. These do not affect playback in any way. There are no jumps, skips, nasty repetitive clicks or suchlike on either side. A second test through headphones revealed some unobtrusive background noise but this was not present throughout. Most of the background noise had disappeared completely during the third (!) play test and many of the quiet passages had CD-quality silence, ruling out any groove-ware. My gut feeling is that a run through an ultrasonic cleaner would eliminate most or even all of the mild background noise. The sleeve is a lovely piece of artwork by Tom Eckersley, who is credited in the top right-hand corner.
Edit: I have now cleaned this with an ultrasonic cleaner. As expected, playback is now excellent.

Record Collector Grading
Mint: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.Excellent: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening of sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.
Very Good: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
Good: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration etc.
Fair: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise: it may even jump. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
Poor: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise etc.. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
Bad: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
