Various Artists, Old Time Fiddling at Union Grove: The 38th Old Time Fiddler's Convention at Union Grove, North Carolina (Prestige Folklore FL 14030) (1964).
For 50 years, Union Grove was one of the most famous gatherings of old-time musicians in the South, a magnet for players from both the region and far beyond it. These recordings from the 1962 event feature old-time band music by J. E. Mainer & His Mountaineers, Thomas Holland & The Crossroad Boys, Morris Herbert & The Twin County Boys, Grandma Pearlie Davis, Charles Hawks & The Brushy River Boys, L. W. Lambert Jr. & The Bluegrass Partners, Bert Edwards & The Randolph Music Club Band, Esker Hutchins & The Surrey County Ramblers, Norman Edmonds & The Old Timers, Ray Childress & The Carolina Foothill Ramblers, Kenneth Edwards & The Sunny Mountain Boys, James Lindsay & The Mountain Ramblers, Franklin Bailey & The Tennessee Pals, and Larry Campbell & The Country Playboys. Produced by Samuel Charters.
The 1961 event had been recorded for a Folkways LP that was held in great esteem during the old-time revival of the '60s and '70s. This LP from the following year is less well known, and copies are seldom advertised. (The seller can find no record of it having been offered on eBay.)
