Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with just one or two light spindle marks, side two indeed has barely a trace at all. No doubts whatsoever, this elusive record has hardly even been played, which for a Saga record, is great news for collectors.

Brief Info: The first album to feature Sandy Denny as a main artist – she three songs included previously on the ‘Alex Campbell and His Friends’ album. A somewhat strange album inasmuch it features two artists that perform separate songs, so a joint album of two solo performers. Dating back to 1967, this Saga record is scarce and elusive. Neither artistes were well known and new to the folk scene. But as soon as you hear the opening song, you will be very familiar with the wonderful voice of Sandy Denny. It sold poorly and was fairly quickly deleted – in fact, this cover has a light ‘DELETED’ stamp on the back just right of centre near the top edge. Each performer sings six songs, the young 20-year-old Sandy sounds fantastic, but do not forget the Johnny Silvo tracks too, these are very good too. This original album was issued on the budget Saga label – a label known for not being the best pressings ever made. But this one really does offer very fine sound with little unwanted and is way above average for this label. Of the few titles I have heard on Saga, most have had light to moderate (some even more) surface noise and crackle, a well-known trait. Although this is not quite audiophile standard, it had minimal surface noises and few examples will ever match or beat this. Silence is a near impossible ask on Saga and most collectors will know this. But the clear fact this copy has hardly been played helps, it has never been subjected to old mono record players, hence this copy is probably as good as they ever get and this remains a very enjoyable record to listen too. The cover is equally impressive and it even includes the Saga inner sleeve that has aged a little more. For fans of the legendary and still sadly missed Sandy Denny, and Johnny Silvo, who is still with us and performs, this vintage rare early album is essential.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this not taking into account of the faint shop ‘DELETED’ stamp on the back. A single format with Clarifoil laminate on the front. This wraps around all the closed folds and ends on the back via the spine for over an inch. The back is matt and smooth finished. The front includes the original STEREO AND MONO black and gold sticker which is nigh-on pristine and has never been removed, picked at or tampered with. Printed and made in England by St James Press.

Lamination & Front: The front is simply superb and grades Near Mint. This lacks the usual issues Clarifoil often offers with no lifting at all – this is absolutely totally adhered and retains a fantastic shine, freshness and clarity. Any faint dull traces are only (just) seen under angled light. Barely a crease to be seen and the original sticker is almost like new. I can hardly imagine finding this vintage 44-year-old cover front better.

Cover Back: The back is almost as impressive, and being an unprotected predominately white surface, the lack of significant grubbiness or ageing is far from common. The very wide laminate end on the spine is practically perfect with just one very small fine surface crease near the bottom. This is made with typically thin card, so the lack of any really obvious record impression or ringwear is unusual, but most welcome. A small round impression from the thick record’s hole is just evident near the centre. Any marks, grubbiness or toning is very light and faint indeed and barely a crease to be seen. The shop put an inverted ‘DELETED’ stamp near the top, this more than obviously deleted pretty quickly after issue emphasising this was a very poor seller and not around for long. This stamps is quite faint but present nonetheless.

Top Edge: Practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: Little short of as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression, all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. End gently tapered in manufacture.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and all retain excellent to near mint shape with no dinks.

Cover Summary: An incredibly strong all-round example of this very fragile 1960’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This superb item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): marked down a little for age darkening/toning. These thin and flimsy, unlined inners in most cases do this. Never easy to find them intact and these are regularly missing altogether. The back top right corner has £40 written on it – the current Price Guide value – which I consider very modest for it’s scarcity, especially in such super condition. This inner has some creasing and crinkle but all edges are unsplit, and that is hugely unusual. I guarantee there has been NO repairs made to this inner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): not an easy one to really grade, and I am pretty convinced this record would not have looked a great deal different when purchased all those years ago. Sage Records were no Decca or the like: they were a budget label and pressing quality was never the best. Almost without exception, these records had visual blemishes even from new. These are purely within the pressing, the company simply did not use top quality virgin vinyl. Hence many copies omit often considerable surface noise, crackle and sometimes pressing distortions. This hardly played copy has hardly any ‘usage’ marks, the light marks seen under light I feel are simply the trait of Saga Records. In terms of this album, a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. The irony is, Saga used plenty of vinyl for this records that are usually substantial weight (as per this). But the material used was less than ‘pure’, almost certainly to keep the cost down so less than full price on the records could be charged when sold. I need to make this clear for any collector unfamiliar with Saga Records, most experienced collectors will know this already, but some may not. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any genuine usage surface marks few, light and faint. Visually a super record (in terms of Saga) that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive early Denny record plays up to, and most (somewhat surprisingly) even exceeds it with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing (again for Saga). Few copies will outperform this original pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, my first ever in fact. This is an acoustic album with sparse instrumentation, hence no great volume to mask any sound imperfections, with that in mind, I consider this an exceptional copy – any surface sound or crackle, very gentle, light and infrequent – somewhat un-Saga-like in real terms. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, but do not expect silence – that honestly, is a near impossible ask on this album and label.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
